Canaries and finches do not spend much time outside of their habitat and will require a habitat designed to help keep them physically, mentally and socially stimulated. Provide the largest finch cage possible for your birds—since finches and canaries do better in pairs or multiples. A flight habitat is ideal with metal bar spacing no larger than ⅜ inch apart.

Equip your finch cage with a grate at the bottom to help keep the birds away from their droppings—line the tray with habitat paper or appropriate substrate for easier cleaning. In the birds’ habitat, be sure to arrange perches, feeders and waterers to avoid contamination. Perches of various diameters and textures will help keep their feet healthy and nails trimmed. Help keep your birds entertained and active by including toys—including swings, ladders and appropriately sized toys—to help prevent boredom. Utilize a habitat cover that can help mimic a nest cavity and create a restful safe space for your birds.
