Crested geckos were once thought to be extinct but were rediscovered in the early 1990s. Since their reintroduction to the greater public, they’ve become more and more popular as pets because of their attractive appearance and small stature. If you’re interested in becoming the parent of one of these terrific reptiles, Petco has the essentials you need to succeed when it comes to crested gecko care. As with other small reptiles, these low-maintenance creatures can make wonderful pets for the entire family.
First, you’re going to need a proper crested gecko habitat—and Petco has plenty of great options. Since these lizards are arboreal reptiles—which means they love to climb—your crested gecko setup should include a tank with as much vertical space as you can accommodate in your home. You’ll also need to outfit your crested gecko tank with a fluorescent bulb to provide your reptile with 10 to 12 hours of light a day. We also carry a wide selection of cleaning supplies, décor and crested gecko hides that you can use to decorate the terrarium.
Your crested gecko will also need to be fed regularly. To learn more about crested gecko food, please read the section below.
Unlike other geckos found throughout the world, this specific species is an omnivore—meaning it eats plants and animals. You’ll want to feed your pet a well-balanced diet that’s full of calcium. A crested gecko eating diet lacking enough calcium can lead to metabolic bone disease. You can also find powdered calcium supplements that can be added to their regular food for added nutrition.
When it comes to mealtime, an offering of powdered commercial crested gecko food will typically do just fine. Treats can include a variety of insects—like crickets and mealworms. These should be given to your gecko 2 to 3 times a week in the evening. You can also use sweet baby foods like peaches and apricots as treat options.
It’s also essential that your gecko has access to fresh drinking water, in a shallow dish, at all times.
Substratum is used to line the bottom of your gecko habitat. Before you pick one for your reptilian friend, consider the ease of cleaning, safety and whether the specific crested gecko substrate you plan on using can retain humidity. We recommend starting with paper towels for your young lizard before moving onto something more substantial as they grow. When your pet matures, try sphagnum moss by itself or as a top layer over another substrate like coconut fiber.
The best crested gecko tank for you will often depend on how many geckos you have and how many supplies you’d like to put in their habitat. A 20-gallon, tall terrarium can be a good option for your new pet or pets. These active creatures often love to climb and move about their habitat. It’s recommended that you outfit your crested gecko habitat with all sorts of limbs and climbing apparatuses so they can exercise their natural instincts.

Hi there. So I am looking into getting a heat dome for my crested gecko. I know they don’t have to have a heat lam but I want him to have a UVB bulb Because it’s good for them. But I am not quite sure that type to get. Any suggestions? I was looking at petco’s tropical combo pack. He lives in a 10 g. With live plant. (I will upgrade when he is bigger) also do you know an age on him? I got him 3 months ago from petsmart. I could tell he was a male a week after I got him. (Pic from yesterday)
I adopted a sick Leopard Gecko from a local pet store. The pet store doesn't take good care of Leopard Geckos. They have dried Mealworms, no calcium, no humidity, and their all crowed in one hide. My Leopard Gecko Geo wasn't eating Mealworms or Crickets. She is underweight and her tail is skinny. I started to get concerned so I started syringe feeding her daily with ReptaBoost. Today I saw her throw up some of the mix. It looks like she was struggling to regurgitate. Also the humidity is high.

I am about to get a crested gecko and have done lots of research, but am nervous I'll kill my crestie. You see, lots of people have different opinions about additional lighting. 1 breeder said a heat lamp killed many of his crested geckos, while another breeder said it killed her geckos when they DIDNT have a heat lamp. Should I get a heat lamp? (My tank is a 12 by 12 by 18, of that helps at all) Also, should that size tank be good for 1 crested gecko for his entire life?
how will my crested gecko find his food? Is there any way to know the age of the crested gecko? I dont know if this is normal: my crested gecko will flick her toung out about every 30 seconds (not consistantly. just an estamint. cuz sometimes she doesnt do it but once for 15 mins.) Sorry, one last thing.. how often and long should i hold my crestie? she is about half size of a full grown, maybe slightly smaller stoumach wise. Thanks so much for your help! (can i ask tons of qs in 1 message?)
Hello! How can I tell if my crested gecko is egg bownd? Lyra has been eating TONS of insects, so it could just be she is getting thicker, but I am not positive. Also, how big does my crested gecko have to be to be able to carry eggs? (I have not been breeding her, but I have heard they can have eggs anyway) also, is there any chance that baby created could come from the eggs? If so, how do I incubate them, and at what tempature, humidity, etc.
SO i am thinking about getting a leopard gecko, but i am not spending a ridiculous amount of money on a cage so i am using a plastic laundrey hamper that seems about maybe 10 gallons and i am setting up little hiddy spots and stuff but i dont know wha tbeedding i should use and how much light they need please hep :)
I bought a wounded baby gecko, I mean wounded because it's tail is gone. I'm not sure how old or what gender it is yet because of it missing its tail. My questions are I put a piece of clean dried drift wood & some dried out lemons & oranges in its aquarium is that ok or harmful? I also added moisture to its substrate & shallow dish of calcium powder & crickets sprinkled with it. Its tail don't seem to growing. Its only 3+half inches long, any suggestions would be great. Please & thank you
Hello. My crested gecko has her head in an upwards motion, and her toes keep twitching, when she moves she’s sluggish and slow. Why could this be?
So my crested gecko was attacked by my cat the other day she ripped through the netting on the top of his cage and got a hold of him right now he is still alive but he's not as active. He started to shed but then stopped and hasn't finished for a couple of days, how should I help him?
How can I help my crested gecko to move her shed along because she's 11 months old and hasn't shed yet/
hi! my crested gecko will often flick her tounge out every couple of seconds (but sometimes she wont do it for 10 minutues), is this normal? Also, she walks SUPER slow when she is out of her cage, (it takes "4 mississippys" for 1 foot to lift up and go back down). She can run very fast, and i have seen her do it when i am handling her, but when she is out and i am near her, but she is not on me, she will walk like i said. My guess it that she thinks im a preditor. Advise?
