Pigs have quite a reputation for eating whatever is put in front of them—and they will—but pig feed and treats should be formulated to meet their nutritional needs. And just as important as what you feed is how you feed it. Pig feeders come in many shapes and sizes, and the traditional giant trough filled with table scraps may not be the best solution for you. Pig waterers are also essential: Like most animals, pigs need constant access to clean, fresh water.
Many pig keepers choose to use simple buckets or homemade options to water their pigs. However, you can also buy pig waterers that may be more durable and have additional features. For example, you can find no-tip bowls and automatic pig waterers that store water and release it into the bowl to help ensure it’s always fresh. The most important thing is that your pigs always have fresh water available.
The height of your pig waterers depends on the type of waterer and the size of the pig. Pig nipple waterers should be mounted about two inches above shoulder height, while troughs or bowls should be right at mouth level or lower so they can drink easily.
A gravity pig feeder is a trough with a bin on top, called a hopper, that stores the feed. As the pig eats and creates space in the trough, more feed falls from the hopper. The opening into the trough—called the “throat”—can be adjusted for the size of the grain so that too much feed won’t flow into the trough at once. This is one of the most common types of pig feeders.
