Finding the best heartworm medicine for your cat should be done in partnership with your veterinarian. You should consider where they spend most of their time—indoors or outdoors—and how often you want to give them heartworm medication. Oral and topical medicine should be administered monthly, while injectable heartworm medication should be administered every 6-12 months. Keep in mind that heartworm treatments for cats require a prescription from your veterinarian. It’s best to discuss your cat’s heartworm prevention needs with your veterinarian as undiagnosed heartworms can be fatal.
Ordering prescription heartworm prevention for cats is a simple process. Just add the item to your cart, fill in your pet and veterinarian’s information, and Petco will handle getting the prescription.
Yes! Heartworm disease is a serious and potentially fatal disease. It often goes undiagnosed in cats. Many cats affected by heartworms have no adult worms or only 1 or 2 adult worms, but it’s important to understand that immature worms can still cause real damage, resulting in a condition known as Heartworm Associated Respiratory Disease (HARD).
Year-round treatment for your cat is the best and safest option regardless of where you live. There is no treatment for adult heartworms in cats, so prevention medication is important. Chewable and topical options are available in monthly administered doses to help protect your cat. Some new topical therapies are now administered once every two months for ease for pet and pet parent. It’s best to discuss your cat’s tendencies with your veterinarian to decide what treatment is best for your feline.
Cats with outdoor access are more likely to contract heartworm disease, but indoor cats are still largely at risk. Anywhere you have ever seen a mosquito fly is an area where any cat or dog can contract heartworms, as they are spread by the bite of a mosquito. All pet owners are urged to give their cat year-round heartworm preventives, as there is no treatment for cats with adult heartworms.

Hello! We have a puppy who just started his heartworm regiment. We found out that he has roundworm yesterday and began treating immediately. Is our indoor cat at risk? The puppy has not ever gone #2 in the house, she has had no direct exposure to his stools, and there are no symptoms exhibited by her of having a parasite but I want to be safe. thank you!
Adopted 2 cats from county animal shelter last Dec. They'd been seized from hoarder by county. They recently started scratching as if they have fleas, but I can't find any fleas or flea dirt (white cats). Vet prescribed Revolution (selamectin), once monthly, to control fleas, ear mites, intestinal hookworm & roundworm, and heartworm disease (Dirofilaria immitis). I asked for ::::safest effective:::: med (for cats) for these issues, with least potential adverse side effects. Is that what I got???
