There are 3 different types of aquatic environments you can set up in your home aquarium, freshwater, marine or brackish water. Depending on which aquarium you are setting up will depend on what salt and how much you will need. Marine salt is a must for saltwater and brackish aquariums, it contains trace elements and minerals, and has buffering capacity to help keep the pH in the appropriate range. These salts, trace elements and minerals, are specially formulated to recreate the conditions found in the ocean. Brackish water environments are found where freshwater and saltwater meet, basically diluted seawater, you'll need to do your research on which fish live in which environments.
For a fish only tank 1.020-1.025 is the typical range, for an aquarium with invertebrates or coral, a higher salinity is better at 1.023-1.025.
Generally 1.005-1.010 is the best for most brackish water species, but most tolerate variations well.
Most hobbyists use a hydrometer or refractometer, however a refractometer is a better choice as it is incredibly accurate even with very low salinity levels and is just as easy to use!
Most salts are similar in chemical compounds but there are salts that have elevated levels of calcium, alkalinity and magnesium. There are salt mixes formulated for the reef environment and ones that contain probiotics.

We are new to having aquariums, we really didn't realize so many things played a factor with the water. We currently have a 10 gallon tank but want to increase to a 29 gallon tank. We currently buy gallons of water but with the 29 gallon tank we really don't want to have to do that. We have well water with a salt filter. My levels from to tap was nitrate 10, nitrite 0, hardness 0, chlorine 0, alk 100, ph 7.. is my tap water safe even with the salt filter.
I accidentally bought ich x for saltwater. I’m wondering if I can use it in my freshwater tank?

I just purchased imagitarium aquarium salt for my betta. I have never used aquarium salt before and It says on the label that I can combine it with sprinkling in a little bit of food once a day. Does this mean it is safe to add the salt in with my fish in the tank? What process should I take so he doesn't become overwhelmed? Also does this help prevent/get rid of fin rot? Thank you!
Are these steps good for this fish's wound and finrot? Part of the fish fin fell off but it is okay now. We're planning to quarantine him and use aquarium salt. Is there any last minutes subs for the salt? Tomorrow is Christmas so the stores will be closed, and we need to help him asap. so.. Are these steps good and are there any last minute subs?
Hello i have a fish tank 45l with 11 fishes in it (Shubunkin , opaline gourami , honey gourami , trichogaster etc) . i added the fish a week ago and tested the water and it was fine.today i see that 2 of my Scalars aren't eating like everyone else , so i tested the water . Everything was fine except for Nitrite levels that was 3.0 - 5.0 ppm. I changed 25 % of the water and added Easy Life Filter Medium and after some hours i tested again the water quality and it was the same I also added salt
One of my goldfish has fin rot. I just relocated them in a new tank (they were in a bad tank with bad water before, they have backstory that’s not important right now) with new water and all that, I only noticed the fin rot after relocating them. I heard about adding salt into the water, but they’re used to forest water and I have fresh water plants in there. Could you give me some information on how to treat it?
Hi. My betta has ich. I have 3 mystery snails in the tank. Is it okay to put in aquarium salt for the treatment with my snails in there? I put them in separate tanks so I could do a water change on my 5 gallon.
