Trimming your dog’s nails is an important part of a proper grooming regiment. Unruly nails can cause your dog pain or discomfort. In addition to nail clippers and scissors, nail files and grinders are another convenient option for trimming your dog’s nails at home. At Petco, you’ll find a selection of grinders and files that are comfortable to hold and easy to use. Keep in mind, it’s important to slowly introduce your dog to nail care tools. Some pets may be skittish around the electric whirring sound of a nail grinder. If you’re struggling to cut your dog’s nails with a grinder, a nail file may help.
File the nail in a sweeping motion. Start from the back of the nail and follow the curve of the nail to the tip. Filing should help smooth out any rough edges on your dog’s nails.
We recommend using a nail file meant specifically for your dog’s nails.
If you know your dog is comfortable with you cutting their nails, take the grinder and begin to grind around the edge of the nail. Round the surface as you go. Continue to do so until the nail is the preferred length. Be sure to take your time, avoiding the blood vessel in your dog’s nails known as the quick.
This is going to depend on your dog. Scissor clippers are great for large dogs with thick nails, while guillotine clippers are ideal for small to medium dogs. A grinder or emery board file may be appropriate if your pooch is anxious around nail clippers.
It’s important to take your time when cutting or filing your dog’s nails to avoid injury. Just like humans, your dog’s nails can be cut too short, which can result in discomfort. Be sure to avoid the quick, or the blood vessel in your dog’s nail.

How do you cut cat nails ?
How do you cut guinea pig nails
Hi! Jut a quick question. I’ve left my greyhounds nails for far too long a dthey are very long nails. I will be buying a Dremel to file them instead of clipping them. Over what period of time will I be able to have there nails nice and comfortable for them? When I do see their wick(?) I would obviously stop filing but will their wick recede back overtime for me to file more to get there nails back to short and comfortable for them?
can i use dog nail clippers to cut my guinea pigs nails there over grown
Looking to get my dogs nails trimmed. Just not sure how he will do. They are pretty bad.
Have a spunky new rescue chihuahua mix and she is skittish. So much so she will resist any efforts to trim her nails. We have 4 dogs so I have trimmed nails hundreds of times--but with Ricki Ricardo, no luck. I sit on the floor and flip them over and cradle them between my legs. My wife distracts them with peanut butter on a spoon. Besides going to a groomer or vet, any ideas? I thought maybe a groomer table might help. Are there premium nail cutters of higher quality than store bought?
My dog will not let anyone cut his nails. He is getting older and they seem to be growing faster than they used to. He gets very aggressive… nothing will work. Dremels, different kinds of clippers. What can I do. It seems it’s getting harder for him to jump and run they are getting so long.
My dog's nails always make noise when walking. None of the nails touch the ground when she is just standing. Only when she walks. She walks on pavement a lot, so I know it prevents from making her nails grow too long. Even so, she is 2 years old and I have cut her nails only 3 times. Her nails seem a little long to me. But when I look, I can always see the quick. So I can't ever cut anything off. See attached photos. Should I use a dremel and slowly try making her quick recede? Should I ignore?
Our schnauzer has bad nails that seem to splinter break and twist off. We've been to the vet over a half a dozen times in the last 12 months. Our last visit due to a bad back nail the vet conceded that the last trim two weeks prior the nails were not properly trimmed and promised he had trimmed the nails himself. The back nail is no longer an issue however a front nail seems much too long to us and the dog is licking his paw and at the top of that nail specifically. Help what should we do!
My pit bull bent a nail back exposing the quick I believe. What can I do to fix it
My JRT Kiki's nails need constant clipping. They grow like wildfire which means regular visits to the groomers (i am too afraid). She has black nails which makes life harder. Groomer suggested i take her to vet to get them clipped and vet can then cauterize them if they bleed? Any suggestions welcome?
