Vetmedin for dogs falls in the category of heart and blood pressure medication. It’s an extremely important medication for dogs with congestive heart failure due to myxomatous mitral valve disease—a degeneration of the heart valves—or dilated cardiomyopathy—which means a weak heart muscle. Vetmedin is a powerful drug only used in dogs with clinical evidence of heart failure and must be prescribed by your veterinarian.
Vetmedin and other pimobendan-based medications are often a critical piece of the care regimen for dogs in congestive heart failure. It can help relieve their symptoms—such as coughing and excessive panting—making them more comfortable and improving their quality of life. It can be given over the long-term, and your pup may be on it for the rest of their life once they begin. Talk to your veterinarian if you want to stop administering Vetmedin, as it will need to be tapered off.
Vetmedin is a vasodilator—meaning it opens the blood vessels by preventing the muscles in the arteries and veins from tightening. This allows blood to flow more easily and the heart to pump stronger, reducing the blood pressure and helping deliver blood throughout the body. That’s why it should not be used in dogs who already have low blood pressure or certain other conditions.
The most common side effects of Vetmedin include diarrhea, lack of appetite, weakness and lethargy. More serious side effects can include excessive bleeding or bruising, racing heartbeat, collapse, trouble breathing, bloating, jaundice and rash. Contact your veterinarian if you notice any of these signs.

My cat is currently taking Vetmedin (twice daily), Furosemide, Enalapril and Clopidogrel for a recent HCM diagnosis. The insert included in the Vetmedin box states it's to be given on an empty stomach 1 hr before food but it seems like the pill upsets his stomach without food. Is it okay to give a small amount of food with the Vetmedin 1.25mg dose? Or am I able to avoid waiting the full hour and feed him his meal sooner? He does take his other medication with food following the Vetmedin dose.
What's the lowest weight a dog can be on the 1.25 mg of vetmedin. At what weight would the dosage have to be lowered? My dog is 10 pounds and dropping due to pancreatitis most likely but is still on the 1.25 mg of vetmedin.
My cavalier weighing 9 kg has CHF. She is on 2.5mg vetmedin twice a day, 20mg furomicide twice a day & Spironolactone 25mg once a day. This evening I gave her Spironolactone 50mg by accident. This was with her usual vetmedin 2.5mg, 20mg furomicide & 2.5mg furtokor. Will she be Ok?
My 9 year old Rottweiler has congestive heart failure diagnosed 2 year ago he ales 3 vetmedin capusules twice daily 2 lanoxin twice daily 3 frusecare twice daily and 1 diltiazem twice daily but still pants rapidly all the time do you think 3 vetmedin are too strong for him he is 58 kilos

My dog is currently on Vetmedin 1.25mg every 12 hours and Enalapril 1.25mg every 12 hours. He has been on these medications for about 1 and half months and has recently had a few fainting spells. He has an enlarged heart and has a heart murmur. His vet recommended us giving him a half dosage of Vetmedin in between the 12 hours would you recommend this? What are signs that he is getting too much?
