Vetmedin for dogs falls in the category of heart and blood pressure medication. It’s an extremely important medication for dogs with congestive heart failure due to myxomatous mitral valve disease—a degeneration of the heart valves—or dilated cardiomyopathy—which means a weak heart muscle. Vetmedin is a powerful drug only used in dogs with clinical evidence of heart failure and must be prescribed by your veterinarian.
Vetmedin and other pimobendan-based medications are often a critical piece of the care regimen for dogs in congestive heart failure. It can help relieve their symptoms—such as coughing and excessive panting—making them more comfortable and improving their quality of life. It can be given over the long-term, and your pup may be on it for the rest of their life once they begin. Talk to your veterinarian if you want to stop administering Vetmedin, as it will need to be tapered off.
Vetmedin is a vasodilator—meaning it opens the blood vessels by preventing the muscles in the arteries and veins from tightening. This allows blood to flow more easily and the heart to pump stronger, reducing the blood pressure and helping deliver blood throughout the body. That’s why it should not be used in dogs who already have low blood pressure or certain other conditions.
The most common side effects of Vetmedin include diarrhea, lack of appetite, weakness and lethargy. More serious side effects can include excessive bleeding or bruising, racing heartbeat, collapse, trouble breathing, bloating, jaundice and rash. Contact your veterinarian if you notice any of these signs.

My dog is currently on Vetmedin 1.25mg every 12 hours and Enalapril 1.25mg every 12 hours. He has been on these medications for about 1 and half months and has recently had a few fainting spells. He has an enlarged heart and has a heart murmur. His vet recommended us giving him a half dosage of Vetmedin in between the 12 hours would you recommend this? What are signs that he is getting too much?

Dear sir/madam, I have female mixed race terrier. Year before, she had blader stone surgery. She has high alp and holesterol, other ok. She ate royal canine low fat, and drink mineral water ph8.8. Didnt analyze stone. Before ten days new stone and new surgery. I have one logical question: is it logical that stone is struvite because of water she drank all time (alcal)? Also, she use vetmedin 5mg per day. Thanks.
Tot has a nasal tumor and chicken and rice is the only thing she wants to eat that does not cause diarrhea. I want to keep giving her the chicken and rice, since she loves it, but I know this is not nutritionally adequate. She is still a happy dog, with the usual senior energy level. Can I add vitamins or a nutritional supplement to help ? She also takes vetmedin, Lasix, and Enalapril for heart disease. My regular vet suggested a nutritionist, but they want $400..
My dog has inoperable severe pulmonary stenosis she’s only just two years old, four weeks ago I took her to the vets as she started loosing weight very quickly and also started laboured breathing, my vet examined her and thought she may have some fluid buildup and said it would be best to give her a duretic, she said while she’s here I will X-ray , after the X-ray she told me there was a lot of fluid and duretic would not disperse that amount, she’s now on fortekor,Vetmedin, Lasix and antenolo,

Hi my dog diagnose with bigger heart and throat collapse? She is a Tibetan Spaniel 14 years old 5.4kg in weight and my vet said to start giving her Cardalis 25mg 1 per day. My dog has heart failure, currently on pimobendan, frusemide and spironolactone. Recently she had cough and then sudden weakness with high shriek thrice already and I'm thinking of bringing her to vet soon. Most likely she will be started on enalapril. Will that harm her kidney? Cos her BUN was already high from her last blood test. Will enalapril cause Dry cough like what it does to humans?
