Keeping chickens is becoming a popular hobby. Many people keep chickens so they can enjoy delicious, farm-fresh eggs—and in order to encourage laying, you’ll need chicken nesting supplies that help keep your hens comfortable.
The best nesting boxes are usually about 16-inches high, 16-inches wide and 16-inches deep, although this can vary depending on the size of your chickens. The hen should be able to stand up and turn around comfortably. Wood boxes are common and easy to make yourself, but they can be difficult to clean and may not be as durable as other materials. Metal and plastic are easy to clean and durable. Whatever material you choose, be sure to include a liner—such as wood shavings or shredded paper—in your list of chicken nesting supplies.
Yes—the best nesting boxes will be elevated a few inches off the ground. This provides your hens with more privacy and helps prevent the roosters from breaking the eggs. Just be sure you don’t put the nesting boxes higher than your roosting perches. Chickens are naturally drawn to roost in the highest possible place, and you don’t want them sleeping in the boxes.

We have 5 chickens and receive 5 eggs a day. Around 2 weeks ago I noticed one hen had feathers missing around the neck area. I thought maybe it was a cat attack and didn't worry as behaviour was per usual. Today she sat in the coop with her eyes wide open and didn't leave once. This is very unusual but she still layed a perfect egg. Maybe it's noteworthy that the 5th chicken was introduced later however the chicken of concern (ringo starr) was part of the original 4.
My chick's droppings are reddish brown
Hello, Im not sure if you help with pet chickens but if you do i need help with mine, I have four chickens their all female and are around 7 months old i raised them sense they were chicks. One of them is getting pale, smaller, more tired and not moving, she stopped laying eggs, and is pooping neon yellowish. What should i do?
Hi I have some Canadian geese on my pond one out of three eggs hatched mother father and baby have left nest but near and mother is not sitting on the eggs they have been one night without being sat on should I put a heat lamp over and try to hatch them or.......
I opened a box of eggs last night and noticed some tiny insects on the surface of one of them. That particular egg was streaked with a little dirt (presumably poop that wasn’t cleaned off when being packaged up?). There was no sign on the other eggs, so I used them and disposed of the one with the insects and the packaging. I’m now panicking that I / my kitchen is infected with chicken parasites... Any ideas 1. what they would have been and 2. if I should be worried? Thank you! Fraser
My love bird is laying eggs the number crossed 15 right now will it continue and how many days it may take to hatch
Hello, I am I first time chicken owner. I have had my girls for about 6 months now I got all 6 of them from the same place at the same time, they have been together the entire time. They are now laying eggs. Within the last week 3 of my girls have developed a patch on them. The patch is missing feathers and looks like a scab. It is on the same area on all 3 of them. I am extremely worried about them. The area is on their side after the wings and lower than the tail feathers.
Hello. As a bird owner, I have a few questions. I have owned budgies before, but only males, this is my first female and I would like some advice about egg laying/binding. Is there any way to stop my pet budgie from laying eggs, or is there a certain way to help her to lay eggs such as a nest or nest box? Is it bad to stop them from laying eggs? At what age will she start to lay eggs/Do all female budgie lay eggs? And is it bad if I notice that she doesn't start to lay any eggs? Thanks.
Angie had layed eggs and I don’t know what to do. There is a male bird with her in the cage also and he’s always going in the nesting box while she is incubating.
My bunny is pregnant I was wondering if she would need a nesting box?
Hi, my 2 cockatiels laid 9 eggs over the course of a month and 1 hatched yesterday. It is her first time laying eggs and she bit the baby. Now she allows it to stay in the nest but she doesn't feed it and instead just sits on the other eggs. What should we do?
Hello, I have a female budgie named sweety.she is pregnant.what would be the source of calcium for her? Other than cuttlefish bone.....
