Outside cat enclosures present an excellent alternative to keeping your cat indoors all day. A cat patio enclosure can offer your kitty an opportunity to get closer to the outside world and enjoy some fresh air without sacrificing their safety and security—as some cats can be great escape artists.
An outdoor cat run enclosure can be a great way to allow your cat to spend more time outdoors without you having to worry about their safety and whereabouts. Your cat will benefit from the fresh air and exercise, and they may find the space and proximity to the outside to be very calming or stimulating. If your cat is going to be spending more time outdoors, check out our Outdoor Pet Safety Tips.
Your cat will probably enjoy as much space as you give them, but a good minimum size is 2-feet wide, 3-feet long and 2-feet high. That should give them enough space to stretch out while they enjoy the outside air. If you want to provide your cat with a more expansive outdoor cat pen, they surely wouldn’t mind. You can find cat enclosures that offer all sorts of amenities, including multiple levels, additional places to sit and different vantage points to the outside world. The larger cat enclosures can also be good if you have multiple cats, giving them all room to gaze out, climb, play and cuddle.
Each cat is different. While some cats may love their outside environment, other cats may want nothing to do with it. You know your cat best, but it’s not always easy to know how readily they would adopt an outdoor enclosure. Set up your outdoor cat enclosure properly and see how your cat likes it. Once you’ve ensured that your cat appreciates the option to spend more time outdoors, you might consider upgrading to a more elaborate enclosure. Additionally, cats who love their outdoor enclosures might also appreciate walking outside with their pet parents. Check out our article about How to Leash Train Your Cat.
Cats don’t necessarily need an outdoor enclosure—or catio—but they could certainly benefit from one. Breathing fresh air and getting more interaction with the outdoors can have many benefits for their health. The additional stimulation of contact with the outside world can create a more mentally alert cat and encourage more exercise. Whether a cat enclosure is right for you and your pet and the financial and living situation you’re in is up to you. And if you do decide to get a catio for your kitty, check out our article about Designing The Purrfect Catio.

Hey How to make outdoor cat to become indoor cat?
I recently moved and had to Place Most of my cats at a Sanctuary! It's on 5acres out west! I originally had them in a 10x10 enclosure! But it's so Hot she has window open and door! Most of my cats got out, but two are still inside! Even the ones that got out have bite marks or open wounds on them now!, They were all Indoor cats, I'm worried, is it spiders or rats or racoon's?
I have an older cat who loves to go outside. We have a woods behind our garden and she loves it, but letting my 9 month old kitten out isn’t working out. I did lead and recall training and through she was ready. But she jumped the wall as soon as I let her out without a lead and got lost in the woods and I had to go find her and collect her. How can I help her explore outside safely and figure out how to return home like my older cat does?
Hello! I'm working on harness/leash training my cat so that he can go outside with supervision (we live in a very small apartment). We live in a fairly flea and tick free region, but is there any sort of preventative care that I can do to keep him from picking up those/similar bugs? Cat is about four years old, around 13 pounds. Thank you!
Hello. I currently own 3 cats, and they all live inside, although before they lived outside. We live in the woods, and we've had 5 cats disappear when living outside, which is why they stay inside at all times now. The problem is that one of my cats, Johny, a 1 and a half-year-old male (neutered), keeps trying to sneak out the door when it's open. We don't want him to go outside, so we always have to go run after him. He's really sneaky sometimes, so we only notice he's gone after. Any advice?
My car has lived for 2 years (her whole life) as an apartment cat in Korea. We are now living in South Africa where most cats go inside and out. We do not have a secure garden jungle type vegetation. Is there a safe way to introduce her to the outside world? Can she ever freely be a normal cat? We have tried a few times and it seemed that excitement and panic overwhelmed her and we nearly lost her. I am very scared she will get lost.
What vacs do u recommend for a 24/7 indoor cat.. are all truly needed? never exposed to outdoor cats. ty
Hello. Not sure if this is appropriate question to ask, but perhaps you can help. I keep my cat indoors before sundown all night till sunrise. He goes to the bathroom outside. Last few days I noticed muddy prints on his cat door in the morning. Pics included. Cat flap is in storm door. I slide locking panel in & of course close inside door. Do you have any idea who this is? We have squirrels, but I have not seen any possum or racoons. What to do? I keep 2 water bowls in yard 24/7.
Hi! I had a cat for two years in California while I was attending college. I left my door cracked at all times and she’d be outside most of the day and come in at night to sleep with me until the morning.I would bring her home to my parents house and we had a barn. The first summer she stayed in the house but my mom kept her mainly in my room and the second summer I decided to put her in a barn while I was away. My mom would feed her consistenly and well, but I still wonder if it was okay to do
I Have A 4-5-month-old Kitten. I take him outside to my garden and let him run around. however recently he's been going to the neighbours garden and has gone extremely far from home. I'm thinking to keep him at home but I'm worried he might get depressed or something so I'm not sure what to do
Hey. I have an indoor cat and I dont know that I'm completely comfortable letting him be indoor all his life in a tiny apartment. Now, I have bought a harness and leash designed for cats but I dont know how to teach a cat to walk on a leash or even be comfortable in a bubble bag. Hes terrified of going outside. When I tool him to the vet the other day and his heart was racing. How do I get him comfortable in these? I have tried Feliway, it just doesnt seem to work. What do I do?
Can I bring my cat to petco to get fitted for a harness and leash
