Cerenia is an oral medication used for the prevention of acute vomiting and the prevention of vomiting due to motion sickness in dogs.
Cerenia is for dogs.
The first FDA-approved medication that prevents vomiting due to motion.
Sickness in dogs
Safe and effective treatment of acute vomiting from other causes
Scored tablets for accurate dosing
Cerenia contains one active ingredient, maropitant citrate, which helps block vomiting signals in your dog's brain to help prevent vomiting.
Cerenia is given orally. For motion sickness, this medication can be given once a day for up to two days in a row. Dogs should not be fed 1 hour prior to giving Cerenia. Give Cerenia 2 hours prior to travel. Do not wrap the tablets tightly in fatty food such as cheese or meat, since this may keep the tablets from dissolving and delay the effect of Cerenia.
Always follow the dosage instructions provided by your veterinarian. If you have difficulty giving the medication, contact your veterinarian.
This medication should only be given to the pet for whom it was prescribed.
Dogs get motion sickness either because they are anxious while traveling or because their balance is affected by movement. Cerenia blocks vomiting signals, which prevents a dog from getting sick.
Cerenia comes in tablet form.

Talk to your veterinarian about what type of outcome is expected. Have your veterinarian explain the other treatment options that may be available to treat your pet's condition.
Tell your veterinarian if your pet has liver disease, could have eaten a foreign object or poison, is pregnant or may be used for breeding.
Notify your veterinarian of any other medications or supplements your pet is taking. Also if your pet has had any reactions to previous medications.
Do not wrap the tablet tightly in meat or cheese, as it could prevent the tablet from dissolving. Consult your veterinarian if your pet's condition does not improve or worsens after beginning treatment with Cerenia.
Not for use in animals hypersensitive (allergic) to maropitant citrate.
Not recommended for dogs less than 16 weeks of age.
Use with caution in dogs with liver problems.
The safe use of Cerenia in female dogs that are breeding, pregnant or are nursing has not been determined.
Do not use in dogs that have swallowed foreign objects or have eaten poisonous substances.
Side effects are rare, but include drooling, lethargy, drowsiness, lack of appetite and diarrhea. Consult your veterinarian if you notice any of the above side effects.
If your pet experiences an allergic reaction to the medication, signs may include facial swelling, hives, scratching, sudden onset of diarrhea, vomiting, shock, seizures, pale gums, cold limbs, or coma. If you observe any of these signs, contact your veterinarian immediately.
Store in a tight, light-resistant, childproof container at room temperature. Keep out of reach of children and pets.
If you know or suspect your pet has had an overdose, contact your veterinarian immediately.
Consult your veterinarian before using Cerenia with cardiac, anticonvulsant and behavioral medications as well as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) such as aspirin, carprofen (Rimadyl, Novox), etodolac (EtoGesic), deracoxib (Deramaxx), firocoxib (Previcox), tepoxalin (Zubrin), and meloxicam (Metacam) since interactions may occur.

My cat kathy had a nasal lavage on Monday. She now shows extreme signs of vestibular symptoms. vet has her on steroids and cerenia. she is not eating at all. i have been taking her in for fluids. can i continue to give her steroids, cerenia, mirtazapine and add dramamine or does cerenia do the same thing as dramamine? she also had her ears flushed out the same day as the nasal lavage.
Cat was administered 1/2 tablet Cerenia anti-nausea medication as instructed by vet. Cat quickly became lethargic and continues to sleep five hours later. I will discontinue the Cerenia, but does this situation warrant a trip to the emergency vet?
Hi I currently have trixies cerenia for nausea compounded into an oral liquid. Do You know anything about the generic form of cerenia and if it works as well? Also how do you feel about prednisolone being compunded into flavored treats? Effective? Thx
My cat has IBD. He has flares and has just begun a new one. I gave him his normal doses of prednisoline, omeprazole, metronidazole, and added a half a Cerenia. He threw up shortly thereafter. I could identify the pred. and the omeprazole but could not see the Cerenia or flagyl. I am wondering.. would it be safe to give the injectable Cerenia I have on hand for emergencies while not knowing what if any he absorbed...and then remedicate w the others later when it has taken affect? TY
Brandi still vomiting even on Cerenia Dexamethazone and Torbusec. What is Atypical Addison disease and how treated
What is the medication cerenia used for? My dog just got prescribed it and I'm not 100℅ sure why.
Is it acceptable to administer Cerenia and Buprenorphine within the same day in a 17 year old cat with kidney deficiency? She also shows signs of vestibular disease and the Cerenia really helps her. Use of the Buprenorphine is quite rare, but we use it as needed for pain. ie...sometimes she moans and groans after eating canned food like fish flavored Weruva--thus, the Buprenorphine.
My dog was given a Cerenia shot after having episodes of vomiting in the morning. Since then she has been sleeping all day and the vomiting has stopped. She doesn't want to eat and has only been drinking water when I offer it to her. She hasn't pooped or peed since this morning assuming it's because she hasn't eaten or has drank a lot of water today. Is this normal when on Cerenia? Are these side effects of the medication?
Hi trixie is going thru treatment for small cell lymphoma and gets a Leukeran every 2 weeks. My question is regarding Cerenia for nausea. My oncologist has said to give it to her the day b4 her Leukeran and the next few days following. If she gets her Leukeran at 930 tomorrow morning is there a time today that is best to administer the Cerenia ?... I was planning on this evening. Just wondering if the time makes any difference? Thx!
Is it normal for a dog to breathe sort of slow and evenly while on Cerenia, Famotidine, and Sucralfate? She’s been lethargic and non-energetic since we gave her the first dose of Cerenia last night, and i’ve been in contact w my vet. They prescribed the famotidine bc she was having some side effects. She seems to be In a deep sleep right now, but will wake up when I interact w her. I just want to know if she’s okay
I gave my 10 pound dog oral meloxicam, ketoconazole, earlier today before 2:oopm and Cerenia just now 10:00 pm. For Pancreatitis pain??? Did I poison my dog?
My cat started vomiting after vaccination and health examination including blood test. She vomited in about 1hour after eating or drinking for one day. The vet gave a shot of Cerenia to her but she still threw up within 12 hours, after I fed her with some chicken breast. But this time she threw up some unregistered food which didn’t shown in her vomiting before. I don’t know why Cerenia didn’t work. It’s effect should last for about 24 hrs. And the root cause of vomiting confused me also.
