Hello. I am concerned that a possible problem has occurred by the use of medication in his ear. Also, a cat on Lantus needs to eat. This is a situation where you should see your vet as soon as you can. L-lysine was thought to lessen the effects of some herpes related upper respiratory infections, but it has turned out not to be very effective. There is nothing about L-lysine that will be of benefit for Handsome at this time. You do need to see if there is some other underlying condition affecting him, & you do need to check his blood glucose in case his Lantus dose needs to be adjusted. I hope he is feeling better soon. Thanks for using Boop by Petco.

I’m assuming you meant ProZinc insulin and if so there is unfortunately not a cheaper alternative. While less expensive human insulin can on rare occasions be used successfully in cats it usually does not provide good control of diabetes. You also need to start over with dosing and frequent monitoring when switching from one insulin to another which would increase cost. It’s probably best to stick with ProZinc if Mikey is well regulated.

I would also like to add that sourcing is a big issue for supplements. Apart from the palatabity, some companies are better than others. If you choose this route, make sure you speak with someone in a supplement specialty store about reputation. Since there is no governing body for supplements, contaminants are possible.

I found that in cats often Vetsulin is not able to correct Insulin levels long term and that such cats may do better with Prozinc Insulin. This is something you may want to discuss with your veterinarian. Another problem that often keeps cats from regulating is when they have tartar, gingivitis and bad teeth. In that case a dental cleaning often works wonders. This will also reduce stress from dental pain.

Normally cats hardly feel the needle. Try picking up the skin approximately 1 1/2 to 2 inches to one side of the spine behind the shoulder blade and alternate sides every day. Get him settled in your lap first, pet him, make him comfortable, then pull up some skin and put the needle in parallel to the spine, ie not into the muscle but under the skin. If he still keeps jumping out of your lap, then put him on the couch and try it there. You will soon get the hang of it. If you have problems, have your vet or a vet tech show you again.
