Leather Dog Collars

Dogs often love to roll in the grass, run through puddles and dig through the dirt. We love them for their antics, but all this play can cause dirt, grime and moisture to absorb into a dog’s leather collar.

Cleaning a leather dog collar may sometimes be tricky since leather and water typically don’t mix. Real leather dog collars are either made of finished or unfinished leather. Finished leather is glossy or shiny, while unfinished leather usually looks subdued with a matte finish.

• When removing your dog’s leather collar to clean, always put a backup collar with ID tags on your dog. You may also use a personalized dog collar.
• To clean a leather collar, wipe off any mud and other grime using a damp cloth. If the collar is extra dirty, use a mild, dog-friendly soap and scrub the collar with a stiff-bristled brush.
• Wipe down the collar with a clean damp cloth.
• Use a new cloth to dry the collar.
• Hang the collar to dry, keeping it out of the heat and sun—which can break down the collar.
• When the collar is dry, use a cloth to buff the collar.
• If you are working with an unfinished leather collar, clean the collar with saddle soap using a slightly damp cloth. Make sure to work the saddle soap into the leather.
• Wipe the saddle soap off with a dry cloth.
• Once the collar is dry, rub the collar with oil made for leather products. Make sure the oil and soap are dog-friendly.

Leather collars  are designed to be durable and can often look great on any type of dog. Today’s leather collars also come in many different colors, patterns and sizes.

If your dog is highly active, a leather collar might be the right choice, as it will often stand up well to a lot of play and activities. Rolled leather collars also won’t mat or break your dog’s fur, which might be ideal for dogs with longer coats. Leather is made of natural materials, so it may be a great choice for dogs with sensitive skin.
