A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are usually needed. Disinfection may be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking/scratching. I am so sorry to hear that Leo has been bitten and does not seem to be feeling well as a result. Unfortunately, given that it was a rat which it him, as well as he fact that Leo now has a fever and seems unwell I would suggest a trip to the veterinarian for as soon as possible. It seems highly likely that Leo has an infection from the bite. Especially considering that Leo is such a young pup, it is important that he is seen soon. His immune system is not fully developed and therefore may not cope as well in fighting the infection as an adult dog.

I wouldn’t be too worried at this point. If Oden develops any illness or odd symptoms, I would make sure to mention it to the vet. But since the likelihood of a disease is low, there wouldn’t be any treatment recommended at this time.

The main worrying fact is rat poison, if the rat ingested poison before he was killed by your dog, Gracy could be affected by it (it could be fatal). i would recommend taking her to your vet in order to get vitamin K coverage just in case.

Thanks for using Boop by Petco. If Teddy is current on his rabies vaccine, there is almost no concern in that department. If he is not up to date, you’ll need to call your vet because state laws vary on what has to happen next. I would warn first, that it may become infected and he may need an antibiotic so watch for swelling, redness, oozing, or excessive pain at the site. That being said, if that doesn’t seem to be happening yet, that’s a great sign. Next, I would recommend cleaning the wound as thoroughly as you can with dilute betadine or hydrogen peroxide. Then he needs an E-collar ASAP (most pet stores carry them) to prevent the licking so he doesn’t get it infected and lets it heal. If he cannot get to it, feel free to apply a triple antibiotic ointment like Neosporin. Repeat the cleaning and the Neosporin once daily until healed. If at any time the wound looks weird to you or Teddy is acting differently (lethargic, not eating, etc) take him to the vet right away. Si
