Health & WellbeingHi! My cat has bouts of sneezing, clear runny eyes, & possible congestion. No other symptoms. Ive been wiping his eyes as needed & kept a humidifier/vaporizer on. Does this sound like just a URI & how do I proceed? Thx!
Based on your description, it does sound as though Nacho may be fighting off an upper respiratory infection. Unfortunately, many of these cases in cats are viral and antibiotics will not help. However, many times there is a secondary bacterial infection with the viral infection that can be treated with antibiotics. For the viral component, many times the herpes virus is responsible for the clinical signs. I usually suggest using Lysine supplementation to help shorten the duration and lessen the severity of the viral infection. Duralactin with lysine or lysine capsules for cats can be found online quite easily. There are even treats with lysine in them you can find. I would start Nacho on a lysine supplement and see if this helps. If the symptoms persist or worsen, I would take Nacho in to be seen by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made.
