Want to buy a head halter. How long does it take to condition them to it? Longer than a prong collar(he is on one currently he now walks on a regular harness around blocks with other dog loose leash prongs only for going into dog park etc) do people
Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Personally I love the gentle leader muzzle harnesses. It provides owners great control of their dogs. It does take a while to get the dog used to it and they still want to rub their faces on people to get them off. They do that in the exam room with me. I would gradually increase the time you have it on in the house before going on walks and give him treats or peanut butter while he has it on. That way he associates it with good things. I do think so people think it is a muzzle but more and more people know what they are. Personally if it makes your life easier I wouldn't care what some people think. I think people think more highly of the gentle leader than the prong collar. As for walking on a loose leash, it may help with that but it really depends on the dog. Some will take advantage when they know the leash is loose. The best thing to not have a dog pull is to train them to "heel," which is easier to do with the Gentle leader. I hope this he

How do I get my dog to stop pulling/lunging/barking at other people and dogs while on a walk? It makes it nearly impossible to walk her and it’s super embarrassing. Please help!
A head harness, such as the Gentle Leader or Halti, can be used to maintain more control during walks. It is similar to a halter used for horses. A gentle tug will re-establish eye contact between you and Annie Mae and will distract her from other dogs. Correct any negative behavior immediately and consistently reward good behavior. Gradually introduce her to "new" dogs to desensitize her to seeing and being around them. Start out with short walks and increase them as she progresses.

I would recommend a Gentle Leader head halter - this is a great tool that makes it much easier for anyone, even a child, to walk a large dog and gives you better physical control to prevent lunging when he sees something exciting. Ideally, it would also be a good idea to work with a good reward-based trainer who can help you teach him better walking skills, so that eventually the head halter won't be needed. A lot of dogs don't like the head harness to start, but over time they may become used to it. Try putting it on at home and distracting her with treats. Let her wear just the Halti not attached to the leash when you are at home and can watch her and she can get used to feeling it on her head. You could also try a gentle leader harness where the leash clips to the front of the harness by the chest. It would definitely be a good idea to try a front clip harness like a Gentle Leader. The pressure across the chest can help you maintain better control.
