My young dog (somewhere between 1-2 Y/O) loves to swim. However we do not have a pool so the best option is to take him to the local lake. Our leash isn’t long enough to let him get any further than 4 inches deep in the water so we let him off the leash to swim. He saw geese on the other side of the lake and tried to swim across. He got so far that I had to swim 60 yards into the lake and back to bring him back. Any advice to let him swim but stay away from another scary situation like today.

Hi, Thank you in advance for your answer. My 6 months old labrador got hip dysplasia. he now walks with 1 back leg a bit "up in the air". I started to get him in water a bit yesterday for a light exercise. He didn't swim but kept warlking slowly in the plastic pool. the level of water is up to his neck. Could you pls let me know should I continue to get him swim and how? I want to help him get better for his hip and swiming seems good. Thank you very much for your answer.
