My dog seems to get nervous when there are a lot of people around. Thursday being Thanksgiving we will be having family over and I want to know what I can give her to help calm her down.
Poor pup! You can try a DAP pheromone collar along with a natural calming supplement like Zylkene or Composure if you wish - these are very safe and can be purchased over the counter without a prescription. If you think that she may need something stronger, I would recommend talking with your regular vet about whether she might benefit from prescription anti-anxiety medication, such as alprazolam or trazodone.

Hello! For major anxiety inducing events, like fireworks and vet appointments, I recommend getting a prescription anti-anxiety medication. The drug Trazodone is my personal favorite for helping fearful dogs. It's an SSRI, so it works just like an anti-depressant. I give it to my dog about 45 minutes before the fireworks start, and it really helps him cope with the loud noises. You can also put cotton balls in Oso's ears, if he lets you. Most of the fearful dogs will appreciated the muted sounds. Just don't remember to take them out later! I hope this is helpful! Thanks for using Boop by Petco!

Unfortunately, there are no veterinary clinics located in Petco stores in your area - yet. You can get vaccinations done at Vetco vaccination clinics, as well as heartworm and flea and tick prevention. Be sure you get Tars in before he is 6 months of age, and he won't need a heartworm test. He should also be dewormed against intestinal parasites. Please do not give Jackson any medication that was not prescribed for him, as this can be very dangerous, and a dose that is safe for a person may be toxic for a dog. In addition, some human medications contain additives/components that can be toxic to dogs, so it is best to check with your vet before giving any meds to help make sure they are safe. Acepromazine can be very useful in certain situations, depending on the temperament of the dog, how they react to it, and the situation causing the anxiety. If you are concerned about managing behavioural concerns with Jackson, call the vet who saw him recently and see what they recommend, as they should be able to work on a plan to help Jackson feel better.
