What would be considered as a short term treatment with 1mg prednisolone for allergies flare up ?

I’ve taken my dog to the vet for this before and they said it was due to allergies, so they prescribed medicine for her eye, she was better a couple days after. Is there a medicine I can pick up at my local pet smart, PetCo, etc.
Poor Baby! I would first start by trying benadryl and a cone collar to prevent her from rubbing it. See link below for benadryl dosing. Unfortunately, there aren't any great over the counter eye drops that will help to solve this. You can try artificial tears or even a eye lubricant like GenTeal eye ointment. You can find these at most human drug stores. If she isn't improving or ever starts to favor that eye, I would have your vet take a look at her. Your vet can make sure she doesn't have an ulcer on her eye and will be able to send her home with the proper eye drops to make her feel better. Hi quick question why if my dog gets an eye ulcer do I hv to stop her 1mg 1 + 1/2 daily oral pred But when I had a scratched eye last christmas and I was given pred eye drops along with antibiotic drops ? Just being a curious George lol
Thanks for using Boop by Petco! That is an excellent question! The main reason is that the topical (to put in the eye) prednisolone does not have good systemic penetration so it has more of the anti-inflammatory effects of it without the immunosuppressive part of it. However, based on your description, I think this is possibly due to allergies. It really comes down to figuring out what is causing his allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. A secondary infection is likely and also needs to be addressed. Prednisone is not likely to be harmful to be used for a short amount of time to help with itch. However, longterm, it can result in chronic side effects. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. Hello. Petco carries a number of products that might help. Zymox makes a spray & a salve that contains hydrocortisone, that can really help with the itching. On-line, you can find many more products such as shampoos & conditioners that also contain hydrocortisone. Topicals only work for short periods of time. Longer relief can be obtained with immunostimulants such as Apoquel & Cytopoint, both available from your veterinarian. Your pet may also have additional issues such as skin mites, fleas, bacterial & yeast infections in the skin, & your veterinarian can certainly help to sort some of these issues out.
