If a company such as natural balance has veterinary nutritionalists on staff is that the same as brands like science diet and royal canin? Also I've always though brands like science diet and royal canin are junk can you explain why this is or isn't true?

When a pet food companies label says "dried sweet potatoes" or "dried potatoes" instead of "sweet potatoes" or "potatoes" what does that exactly mean? Is this ingredient lesser quality than if it were to say sweet potatoes or potatoes? Why or why not? The company in referring to is Natural Balance. Thanks!

Is it possible for a dog that goes into heart failure to be fed a vegetarian/vegan dog food? The reason I ask this is because I contacted the company whose food I feed now (Natural Balance) and they told me their lowest sodium formula is the vegetarian/vegan one. It's 0.11% sodium dry matter basis and 0.12% taurine. Is this an ok option instead of a prescription food? I'm really not a fan of hills. Please explain. Thanks!

I am considering getting a dog for my family. But, there will be no one at home for at least 7 hours 5 days a week. However, we are wondering if it would be okay to get another dog so they can keep each other company. We know that they like human company, but is company from other dogs okay too? Also, if we go along this route, do should we worry about the dogs bonding to each other and not to us? It is very important that the dogs have a good relationship with us too.

Hi Melanie, if a pet food company will not provide you with a caloric distribution coming from protein, calories and fat on an as fed basis, not just dry matter, is this a red flag for the company? this particular company would not provide this seemingly simple request, and it seemed as though they didn’t have this information either. This is a company that makes cooked diets so their response was that comparing their diets to kibble was apples and oranges... is this accurate? Thank you.

Hi Melanie, thank you for your answer! They actually outright accused me of working for another pet food company. They asked me if I was calling from another company. They said that quote “you ask a lot of unusual questions that most of our other customers do not ask” I claimed that I just like to acquire in depth and solid information about a company and product before I plan on using it for any duration. they seemed offput by me asking quote “so many questions.” What are your thoughts on this?

I've read that dry dog food can last up to a year once opened, but I've also read that it should be used within 4-6 weeks after opening. I contacted the company that I buy my food from and they said that the food will be fresh for 18 months after opening. The company where I buy my food is Fromm. What's a better food Acana singles or Natural Balance l.i.d.? My dog does well on both but seems to do particularly well on the natural balance. I thought Acana was better so I'm confused to why she does better on the natural balance? Is natural balance still a good brand, why or why not? Thanks!
