Hello. You will need to apply a styptic to stop the bleeding. If you do not have anything at home, or it will take time to purchase some, then I would recommend running your bird to a vet to have the feather dealt with professionally. Sometimes clamping the feather works, but often the entire feather needs to be plucked, & if it is not done properly, may cause undue pain to your bird & possibly damage the follicle. Thank you for using Boop by Petco.

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! I recommend taking Jiriya to a vet to rule out a skin infection. The areas you describe sound a lot like an allergic reaction to fleas. Sometimes you will not see fleas on a cat because they are good groomers. If there is a skin infection, he will need antibiotics. If there is a reaction he may need an anti-inflammatory. Also, if there are fleas he needs a topical prevention from a vet applied every 30 days for at least 3 months to kill the flea life cycle. Once a diagnosis is made by your veterinarian they can discuss the best treatment option for Jiriya. Good luck and kisses to Jiriya!

The most important factor in growing healthy feathers is to ensure your bird is eating a properly nutritious and balanced diet. Your bird should be eating mostly a pelleted diet (80% of the total diet) with occasional treats/snacks such as fresh fruits and veggies. Your bird should only get nuts and seeds very occasionally. Being relatviely stress free is also important to proper feather growth and grooming as well. Do your best to keep the bird’s enclosure clean and have plenty of toys for her for enrichment. I hope this helps. Thanks for using Boop by Petco. Best of luck.

Do a Google Search for "bird e-collar". There are many websites that have step-by-step instructions for creating one your own out of paper plates and other household objects, especially for smaller sized birds. If the feather plucking is behavior related rather than health-related, adding in some more enriching items such as toys that require chewing, puzzles, etc can help distract Maya and prevent boredom plucking. Spending time together can also help add enrichment which may help reduce her behaviors. If the plucking is related to parasites or a skin infection/illness, it is best to have a vet take a look. Parasites can be treated with products such as a mite spray from your local pet store, however infections/illness may require additional treatment or medication from your vet.

Yes, it sounds like you would provide a safe and loving home for a bird. I like your plan to keep it separate to reduce stress on the bird. Gradually introducing it to the other animals would be good once it’s very relaxed and settled in. Thanks for using Boop by Petco to help you get answers to your veterinary questions.
