Fortunately, there are a number of heartworm preventatives similar to Heartgard, including TriHeart Plus and Iverhart. Other options for heartworm prevention have different active ingredients and include Trifexis, Interceptor, Sentinel, Revolution, and Advantage Multi. Simba's vet will be able to prescribe another option and make sure that Simba has had a recent heartworm test.

This drug appears to be a generic form of the drug Trifexis, which is used to prevent heartworms, intestinal parasites and fleas. Most dogs take this drug without issue. The most common side effect is vomiting or GI upset and giving the drug with a meal can help decrease the chances of this. I have had a few pets seem lethargic the day they take the medication, but that is the most severe side effect I have noted. It is not recommended in dogs with a history of seizures. You can find all sorts of scary reports on the internet about different drugs and food people are convinced killed their dogs, but often these people are just looking for an easy explanation for what happened to their dog and most of the time the heartworm prevenatative is NOT the cause of what happened. You can review their safety information and product label at http://vethical.com/dogs/comboguard/. If you still feel uncomfortable using the product you can ask your vet for a different medication for heartworms a

Nexgard is an excellent choice for fleas and ticks, and is one of the products I recommend most frequently. I generally prefer Sentinel for heartworm prevention rather than Heartgard, as it covers a wider range of intestinal parasites and also seems to be more effective at preventing heartworm infection, especially in areas with lots of heartworm disease such as the southern/southeastern US.

Your dog is so handsome! Both Heartgard Plus and Tri-Heart Plus protect against heart worms, but I personally like Heartgard Plus best. As of yet, we have very little research on CBD oil in veterinary patients, so we cannot make any recommendations one way or the other about this product - we do not know what an appropriate dose might be, and if there are any potential health concerns or drug interactions in dogs. In addition, because it's a schedule 1 drug, it's illegal for us to prescribe or recommend. I hope this helps!
