Explore Petco's wide selection of Carefresh products and explore their all natural approach to pet bedding and food for small animals. Carefresh's commitment to keeping their products healthy and fresh ensures that their small animal bedding is made from scratch and that their food features 10 real fruits and vegetables.
When selecting colors to go into their products, Carefresh specifically uses those with a history of human use and are never tested on animals. In addition to using natural colors, Carefresh also refuses to use bleach in their white pet bedding products, so you can provide your pet with a comfortable area to rest that's made from virgin reclaimed paper fibers. Carefresh now offers new species specific bedding, so hamsters, guinea pigs, chinchillas and more can each get their perfect fit. Because Carefresh natural paper fibers are three times more absorbent than wood shavings, your small animal can stay warm and dry longer. The unique Carefresh Odor Stop formula can keep small animal cages smelling fresh for up to 10 days by suppressing ammonia odors.
To ensure your pet's safety, Carefresh food and bedding products go through rigorous quality assurance procedures and third party testing and adhere to established safety guidelines mandated by regulatory and animal welfare agencies. All Carefresh products are reviewed by veterinarians and other experts to ensure animal health, so if your pet nibbles a little bedding out of curiosity or habit, they'll be safe.
Carefresh is constantly evolving to meet pet parent's expectations from the food they provide their small animals. From changing the hay in their Carefresh rabbit food products, to dropping artificially shaped pellets in favor of natural and healthy treats like carrots, sweet potato and apple, Carefresh goes out of their way to provide your small animals with the highest quality ingredients they can find.

Hi there, and thank you for your question. There is a definite risk of a gastric or intestinal obstruction with ingestion of litter, so I would recommend switching to a bedding type that she will not eat. This may be a bit of trial and error to find the right bedding, but I would suggest trying Carefresh, or Yesterday's News as safe, non-toxic options. I hope this helps, and that Mistle is otherwise happy and healthy!

Paper bedding such as Carefresh bedding or this type is currently recommended. There would be no greater issue with them ingesting the paper bedding versus the wood shavings bedding, as the paper bedding would actually be more easily digested (as paper is actually a product made from broken down wood!). The paper is more expensive but has less risk of causing wounds (occasionally the wood shavings can have sharp pieces and cause injury to the skin or eyes or mouth) and less risk of dust or other irritants to the respiratory tract.

Hello, and thank you for your question. It is possible for bedding to cause itchiness if the pet is allergic to the material, or if the bag of litter carried parasites such as mites. I would suggest using a paper-based bedding such as Care Fresh: https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/product/carefresh-natural-pet-bedding It may also be a good idea to swap out the bag of bedding altogether for a new one, and thoroughly disinfect the cage with soap and water in case of parasites. Of course, the itchiness could also be unrelated to the bedding, so if the itchiness does not improve after making these changes, I would recommend visiting your veterinarian for a further workup. They may perform a skin scraping and provide medication if they suspect a bacterial infection. I hope this helps, and that Robert feels better soon!

A peat/soil based or sawdust based pellet is less likely to stick to his paws, you can also try using only a bare scattering of litter over newspaper but this would then need emptying at least twice daily

It may be an allergy to the bedding you are using. It is hard to tell from the photos but it looks like you are using wood shavings. It is best to use a low dust product made for hamsters and other small animals called CareFresh as it is 99.9% dust free. I would start with this. https://www.amazon.co.uk/s?k=carefresh+hamster&ref=nb_sb_noss_1
