For optimum aquascaping use 2 lbs. of gravel per every one gallon of water. Instructions: Rinse well in tap water to remove loose particles before use. Do not scrub or rub together. Do not use soaps, detergents or bleaches. Suggested uses: Create your own unique aquarium environment using one or more colors. Natural underwater settings can be recreated by combining various colors or textures. Enhance the depth of your outdoor goldfish or koi pond with colored gravel, gradually using lighter colors at the edges and darker colors towards the greatest depths. Use natural color tones to help disguise man-made pond edges and containers used for water gardens. Terrariums: Create interesting landscapes and attractive habitats for reptiles, amphibians and small animals.

Beware of this Product!

Attention Fish Parents: Do not buy these rocks if you want your fish to live. I recently purchased these rocks to replace the old ones in my tank. In my tank I have four goldfish and an albino bristlenose pleco. My fish have been used to the water changes I do and have always been fine after I’ve done it. When I was switching out the rocks I also did a water change. Unfortunately less than 24 hours after, all my fish were dead. Normally they are fine with the water changes and are pretty hardy fish. If my one fish can survive jumping out of the tank he can handle a little water change. The only difference I could after the water change was the new rocks. After reading reviews of this product, which I wish I would’ve done sooner, I realized that other people have gone through the same problems as I have. So to protect your fish please do not purchase these rocks!!

It killed our frog

Do NOT use this for Frogs! It killed our green frog when she accidentally ate one. A Petco employee recommended this substrate to us when they sold us a kit for the frog. Worse mistake we ever made for our frog.

No, I do not recommend this product.

Frosted Black gravel

Somethings fishey here

Added Frosted Black, to an existing tank. Did not remove the older black gravel, just added, so I did not disturb the beneficial bacteria. Within Hours, Kuhli loaches, started dying, lost guppies also. Did a water change, added an airstone. More death, another water change, as all fish were still barely moving and staying at the surface, not eating. Day 3 more death, but slowing down, another water change. I have kept fish for over 50 years, tank had been estabilished for more than 20 years. All testing was normal, no change in ph. But the surface tension was really thick, basically starving the fish of oxygen. Never had this happen before, but after researching this, many others have had a problem with the black gravel, Imagitarium brand.

No, I do not recommend this product.

Perfectly fine (Shallow Creek)

I bought 2 bags of the "Shallow Creek" gravel, and I am very satisfied. Colors ranged from slightly off white to grey, with a nice range of light brown and cream colored stones. It is much coarsar than the colored products, but that's not an issue for me. I am running an undergravel filter as well, and it appears to be very good for that purpose. I have not experienced any aquarium deaths that I could link to the gravel, nor does it appear to cause cloudy or murky water. It might be that the more natural gravel isn't coated the same way. I wish it had been darker, but it is in all other ways fine.

Yes, I recommend this product.

Good gravel for price

The black gravel is perfect for my needs as the edges are fairly rounded and gentle on my fish and the look is sleek. My fish also prefer the darker gravel because lighter substrate makes them feel exposed. I didn’t even wash the gravel before using and the water was crystal clear.

Yes, I recommend this product.

Hi! Is this gravel good for growing live plants in my fishtank?

  1. Hi Gwen02, Good day! You can utilize the IMAG Gravel Substrate in a planted tank, but there are other factors to consider when starting out, such as lighting and fertilizer. We also offer substrate SKUs specifically designed for planted and shrimp tanks if they wish to explore those options. See below for more information. https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/product/fluval-plant-and-shrimp-stratum---88lb-2769446 https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/product/eco-complete-planted-black-aquarium-substrate Thanks

Hi! Just curious if this would be ok for my hermit crab terrarium.

  1. Hi hermitcrab_mama, Good day! Hermit crabs prefer sand. Please check the link below: ,https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/category/reptile/hermit-crab-supplies/hermit-crab-sand-substrate Thanks,

Is this safe for turtles?

  1. Hi Cliffordjf777, Good day! The main issue that can occur is accidental ingestion by the turtle that could cause impaction. Usually for turtles larger pebbles or small rocks work best. They won’t accidentally swallow those. It’s also good to make sure they are smooth and not jagged edged. Thanks,

What size are the shallow creek pebbles?

  1. Hi ElleFuku, Good day! The pebble size specs for the Shallow Creek Med SKUs specs are ¼” – 3/8, Thanks

is the frosted black painted

  1. Hi Valued Guest, Good day!, Yes, it is painted with non-toxic paint. Thanks,

I heard River rock can alter the ph of the water. Is this something that only happens once when you first put it in or does it constantly change the ph?

  1. Hi hoodat, Good day! This product has very minimal impact to PH and water chemistry. It is a coated in a non-toxic epoxy. Thanks,

Is the white painted or stark white or is it a natural color stone white? It looks like an unpainted stone type, but it’s hard to tell online. Thank you.

  1. Hi LoBentley217, Good day! It is an off-white base rock that is painted white and coated. Thanks,
