When building your perfect aquarium, you may not give the bottom of the tank much thought—you may be more focused on fun décor, live fish and plant selections. But freshwater substrate plays an important role in your aquatic ecosystem. It can:
When it comes to freshwater tanks, you normally have two options—freshwater fish tank gravel or freshwater substrate sand.
Gravel substrate is a great choice for new fish keepers—the larger size of gravel allows water to flow through it easily. This means less buildup of bacteria. Your aquarium needs good bacteria to thrive, but too much can make your fish ill.
You have a variety of choices of freshwater aquarium gravel. There is an array of colors, styles and sizes to choose from. Gravel is a great choice for larger fish—many like to play with the gravel pieces and move them around in the aquarium.
Aquarium sand substrates can be great for our smaller fish friends who love to burrow and hide. It’s important to only use sand that was designed for aquarium use—it has special coatings to minimize interference of the habitat. Sand does need to be cleaned more often than gravel, but certain species of fish love to play in the sand and even consume a small amount to aid in their digestion.
When choosing your freshwater aquarium sand, remember that the finer the grain, the more bacteria will grow. It’s important to clean the sand regularly so your fish won’t get sick. If your tank is only going to house aquatic plants, you should choose a substrate that was designed for plant life.
A good rule of thumb is to use 1 lb. of freshwater aquarium substrate for every gallon of water for fish, though this can vary with aquarium size. You want to be careful with the depth—if it’s too deep, hydrogen sulfide may build and can be deadly to your fish.
If you’re raising aquatic plants, you’ll want to add more substrate so they have room to grow roots. They need around 2- to 3-inches of the substrate to flourish. This can vary with larger plants.
Which one you choose depends on what type of aquatic friends you’re adding to your habitat. It’s important to research your new pet to find out their likes, dislikes and must-haves to thrive. Can you use sand from the beach to add to your freshwater aquarium, if its sanitize?
first of all, thanks for your advice with my african dwarf frogs! after the aquarium salt bath they are doing great and even look more vibrant now! i was wanting to know what substrate would be best in the tank. would sand be okay or would they eat that like the gravel? i have a heavily planted aquarium and need something to keep the plants in place but i dont want my frogs to eat it and have something happen to them. i find conflicting information when i research it online. thanks!
Can Betta fish tank have sand from river?
I am setting up a new habitat for my 2 sibling gerbils. I want it to be as natural of a habitat as their ancestors in the wild live in. Which substrate would you recommend that would be as natural as they would receive in their desert environment?
We are new to having aquariums, we really didn't realize so many things played a factor with the water. We currently have a 10 gallon tank but want to increase to a 29 gallon tank. We currently buy gallons of water but with the 29 gallon tank we really don't want to have to do that. We have well water with a salt filter. My levels from to tap was nitrate 10, nitrite 0, hardness 0, chlorine 0, alk 100, ph 7.. is my tap water safe even with the salt filter.
Which fish and plants suitable in planted tank (75 litre ) ?....And which substrate use are.....And how to medication apply for Discus and tetra fish in planted tank without harm to plants and biological filter ?
Hello, Cat litter isnt easily available in the place where I live, so we have trained our cats to use sand(regular clean sand used) for toilet purposes. Unfortunately, that is becoming a commodity of limited supply. The good news is that we live near the beach, so provided I change the litter two times in a day, can I use beach sand as litter adjacent? Also any idea as how to clean beach sand to remove any contingent bacteria or such, which in God's Grace should be none. Thank you. God Bless.
We’ve recently bought a pet snail and I’m wondering if we should put calcium rich sand on the bottom of the tank we have some made for hermit crabs and I feel as though he shouldn’t be submerged in water all the time so should I put some down or is he fine? I’m unsure of what type of snail he is but the person at the shop said he was a cold water snail I think
