Talk to your veterinarian about what type of outcome is expected. Have your veterinarian explain the other treatment options that may be available to treat your pet's condition.
Tell your veterinarian if your pet has liver disease or may be pregnant or used for breeding.
Notify your veterinarian of any other medications or supplements your pet is taking. Also if your pet has had any reactions to previous medications.
If you miss a dose, give it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the one you missed and go back to the regular schedule. Do not give two doses at once.
Metronidazole may need to be given for extended periods of time to achieve satisfactory results. Notify your veterinarian if your pet has incoordination, depression, a head tilt, disorientation, seizures, or other neurological signs while taking Metronidazole.
Metronidazole has an unpleasant taste; contact your veterinarian if you have difficulty giving the medication.
Not for use in animals hypersensitive (allergic) to the drug or its derivatives. Not for use in pregnant, or lactating animals (female animals nursing their young) unless benefits outweigh the risks. Use with extreme caution in debilitated animals or those with liver disease.
If the pill has prolonged contact with the mouth or is crushed or chewed, it may cause excessive salivation and pawing at the mouth. Side effects include nausea, loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, weakness, blood in the urine, head tilt, and stumbling. It may also cause liver disease, which can result in yellowing of the gums, skin, and eyes. Contact your veterinarian if you observe any of these effects.
Store in a tight, light-resistant, childproof container at room temperature. Keep out of reach of children and pets.
If you know or suspect your pet has had an overdose, contact your veterinarian immediately. Signs of an overdose would be similar to the side effects listed above, plus stiffness, seizures and disorientation.
Consult your veterinarian before using Metronidazole with any other medications including vitamins and supplements, oral anticoagulants (e.g., warfarin), cimetidine, phenobarbital, phenytoin, sedatives or tranquilizers since interactions may occur.

My dog was diagnosed with hemorrhagic gastroenteritis on Tuesday evening and the vet prescribed Metronidazole. My dog hasn't had a bowel movement since then (it's now Friday). Is this normal (he's also on chicken and rice diet). Also I give the metronidazole to him hidden in a teaspoon of natural yoghurt - will that have an adverse effect on him?

So I took my foster kitten to see our shelter vet today as he has had explosive diarrhea lately. She didnt seem interested in determining the cause and instead gave treatment for the symptoms; however, I expected this. She prescribed 0.6 ml of liquid metronidazole BID and 0.3 ml propectalen 2 to 3 times daily. He tested neg for parasites by the way. About how long will it take the metronidazole to work? I hope not long due to concern for dehydration. I am giving SQ fluids though.
We are giving our 12 week old kitten metronidazole 25 mg every 12 hours because he more than often has had bright red blood in his stool. The vet prescribed metronidazole saying that it could be parasites. He hasn't had a bowel movement in 48 hours. Does the drug cause constipation, should we stop the meds? Is 48 hours without a bowel movement bad? He is eating very well and his activity level is normal as well. He used to have regular bowel movement (1-2 times a day). Thank you.
Hi! Beau's been having loose stool for 3 weeks and is on metronidazole for a week already but diarrhea's worsen. Could that be the side effect of the med-- how would I know if the med is working? He's also on 2.5mg of prednisolone every other day for bronchitis but my vet wants to up his dosage to 5mg daily for a few days. Is that advisable? If both the preds and metronidazole don't work, what's next? He's eating well, hydrated, and acts normal. I also give him probiotics. Thank you!
Hello, My cat was prescribed 30 x Metronidazole 50 mg/ml (compounded liquid) and also Gabapentin to use as needed. The Metronidazole is for stomach upset that has caused her to eliminate on my bed. She gets very upset by the meds - have to wrap her in a towel etc. Now she is scared of me and pulls away when I go to just pet her. I am afraid if I keep administering the meds she will never be the same with me again. But she needs them and I’ve tried hiding it in food of all kinds.
My six month old golden retriever puppy had diarrhea and the vet prescribed metronidazole last week. He is currently having cottage cheese and rice for his meals. He stool is soft and orange. What should we do?
