If my dog seems to be allergic to chicken and beef food (only salmon doesn't make him sick), would he also be allergic to beef rawhide?
Hi and thanks for posting! If Blue is allergic to beef and chicken, all products associated with these proteins should be avoided which includes beef rawhide. Would you recommend to give beef jerky (homemade with only one ingredient: meat. No salt, no spices.) to puppies and dogs as treats?
Hi there and thanks for posting on Boop by Petco! While a very small limited amount of salt/spice free beef jerky is okay as a treat once in a while, feeding more frequently may cause an upset stomach and also may be too many calories and fat. There are a lot healthier treat alternatives out there such as a small amount of green beans, carrots, or even blueberries and apples are tasty treats without all the fat and extra calories. Well I personally like Beggin Strips. My dogs love them, and there is no chance of a choking hazard. I never recommend rawhides due to choking and obstruction concerns. Normally I'd recommend pig ears, but I understand there is a salmonella outbreak now with pig ears. I don't do many treats because they really aren't needed.

My dog is going through a food trial for allergies. They are thinking it might be a chicken allergy but are not sure yet, and it could be more than one. She is a year old. She is eating signature kangaroo food right now and seeing if that helps.
The key to doing treats while a dog is on an elimination diet is to use treats that have the same ingredients as the food you are trying. Sometimes the easiest way to do this is to use canned food of the variety and flavor that you are using to put in a Kong or bake into treats. Other options would be to use sweet potato chews if the food you are feeding has sweet potatoes in it (which Zignature kangaroo does not) or giving dehydrated chews that are the same meat source that you are feeding (which will be a challenge for a kangaroo food). So, for the food you are feeding right now, the best option may be to use canned Zignature kangaroo to create treats for Lucy. Good luck! I hope that was helpful. Thanks for using Boop by Petco.

A few general recommendations: stick with well known brands with a good reputation. Look for products made in the USA. Kibble works great for treats and I use Purina Pro Plan chicken or lamb and rice. Dry biscuit type treats usually have less calories and salt. The jerky or moist type treats are fine in moderation (they have more calories and salt usually). Lastly, many dogs really like dehydrated chicken livers and chicken jerky.
