Thank you for using Boop by Petco! Prozac, or the generic medication fluoxetine is safe for dogs, even with heart murmurs. It may cause slight sedation. Natural products may not be as reliably effective, and may also cause sedation. These should also not have any affect on Bradley’s murmur. I definitely recommend avoiding giving both natural chews and Prozac at the same time. I hope this helps and am happy to answer any other questions you have!

I usually don't expect to see positive changes for at least 6 weeks. You may want to discuss these side effects with your vet to see if there might be a better anxiety medication to use - there is no one best medication for all dogs, sometimes it is trial and error. I can't really tell you what to expect next, since every dog is so different. I would not expect that his current side effects would get worse, though.

Hello and welcome to Boop by Petco. Although routine bloodwork isn't standard for Fluoxetine, it is important to ensure that animals don't have diabetes or liver impairment while on this medication. Therefore, bloodwork before starting is a good idea, and checking the liver values every once and a while is a good idea as well. Best of luck with Willow.

I'm not 100% sure about the stability of fluoxetine outside of the capsule, but as long as a capsule is not extended release I will sometimes recommend that people put the contents in a meatball like you describe for pets who are difficult to pill. I would be concerned about the stability of the drug in the meatball for 10 days however - it would probably be best to make each meatball daily and leave the remaining medication in the capsule or a dark plastic bag so it isn't exposed to light or oxygen. You may also want to ask your vet about having the medication compounded into a liquid suspension through a compounding pharmacy which might make it easier to squirt into a meatball and would result in more accurate dosing.

I would discuss this issue with your veterinarian. We definitely do not want to stop the Prozac suddenly as he could develop withdrawal symptoms. Other supplements that could help include Zylkene or a prescription cat food like c/d® Multicare Stress Feline. Acupuncture is another alternative method that may help with stress and urinary issues in cats.
