Questions
Will I still need root tabs for high tech plants or will this stuff to it?
- In my experience, it would depend on the plants and the conditions in your tank. The substrate may not provide all that all plants need. Make sure the tabs are shrimp friendly if you have them in your tank.

I have lotus plants that are growing and i need to plant them. Will this product work for my plants?
- Yes, this is a substrate that is designed for plants.

Is this buffering substrate? Looking to keep Red Cherry Shrimp only.
- It is not a buffering substrate and will keep pH and KH neutral. A small increase in GH is to be expected with any natural substrate. It's ideal for Neocaridina (cherry shrimp).

About how big are they? I ordered some baby dwarf tears for my betta aquarium. Will this work for the roots of the plant and will it make the pH go too high? Thanks!
- This won't work with DBT. I had them in this substrate for 6 months and not growth. DBT are only going to grow with a dirt/dirt based substrate and preferably CO2 which I have now and they're growing great. This is inert clay ball substrate which is nice for a higher PH setup. I have white clouds and guppys in this tank currently with a higher ph and low light beginner plants. DBT is an advanced setup plant.

This substrate is advertised as "Plant and Shrimp" substrate, but it brings pH neutral water (7.0) all the way up to a pH of 7.8! Why is this sold as "shrimp" substrate if it turns water so badly alkaline??!?!!!??
- pH is not much of an issue for neos and several other species. I breed all my neos in water with a pH of ~8 and their populations have exploded. If you are interested in caridina shrimp then yes you would be much better off lowering your pH to an appropriate range for that species. You can add alder cones, natural woods, and Indian almond leaves to your water to naturally lower pH. Peat moss is another alternative for lowering pH. I wanted to use this for caridinas but after reading this I have definitely decided on fluval stratum.

I’m about to set up a 40 gallon planted tank. I’m using a 40 breeder. About how many of these bags should I use? Would it be detrimental to use a layer of plain gravel on top of this substrate, and would that affect how much of this I would need to use?
- You will need about 7-10 bags. Please call the Aqueon Team at 888-255-4527 if you have other questions.

How many 5 lb. bags would be needed for a 16 gal. Fantasy Bowl (Biorb) aquarium for minature shrimp with plants? Thanks.
- Look, I bought this for a 5 gallon planted betta tank & 1 bag was perfect. I use 1 lb per gallon & depending on the shape of the tank get about 1.5 inches of depth which is plenty. So for your 16 gallon tank, I'm assuming it's a bow front style or globe shaped as rectangular tanks don't come in this size, 3 bags would be fine but 4 would give you more depth & you probably won't need all of the 4th one either.
