Most pet parents are familiar with topical or oral flea and tick preventives. So which is better for your pet—topical or oral?
Updated on November 12th, 2025
Yes, of course. There are no drug interactions between these two drugs. Most heart and flea prevention can be given with other medications no problem. : ) Best wishes with your pet Lucas. Take care!

In most cases, when Plavix is prescribed for a blood clot, it's meant to be used as a long-term medication - most of the cats I prescribe it for will remain on it for life. So my guess is that Caramel will be staying on it for quite a while. Assuming that you have enough medication to get through tomorrow (or until Monday, if your vet is closed until then), I would continue giving it as directed without stopping until you can talk to your vet about the long-term plan for Caramel.

Most licensed flea and tick treatments are safe when used in accordance with the guidelines - most importantly the species (many cannot be used in cats), age of pet (some are not recommended even at 16weeks), weight of pet and most importantly frequency of reapplication of products used. It is vital to never mix flea products unless clearly marked on the packaging or advised by your vets office - many shampoos, sprays, spot ons and household products comtain very similar ingredients and using multiple products at the same time can rapidly lead to overdose and toxicity. The cheapest product off the shelf is often not the most economical as it may be short or poorly acting, only kill adults on your pets and not repel new infestations or may not control the rehatching of eggs laid in the environment. A good quality household insecticidal spray such as acclaim or indorex is vital to inactivate eggs and prevent hatching and reinfestation. Monthly oral tablets such as capstar or comfortis ca

With oral prevention there are no issues with bathing/swimming interfering with the product's efficacy as well as they don't typically lose any effectiveness between doses compared to topical flea/tick medications. There are also more chances for errors in applying topical medications compared to oral medications. Topical medications also rely on the skin absorbing them appropriately which rarely doesn't happen. I can't comment on the cheapest effective brand as prices can vary among areas as well as certain products can be discounted as part of a promotion depending on a veterinary clinic, online pharmacy and store. However ineffective products in my experience include Hartz and most collars.
