Fritz Dark Water Almond Leaf Extract is a natural water conditioner containing concentrated tannins from the leaves of the Terminalia catappa tree, also know as Indian Almond Leaves. These tannins will create a more natural environment for Bettas, shrimp and other fish. Almond leaves contain humic acids and tannins which are known to have antimicrobial properties, naturally lower pH and create desirable blackwater conditions in the aquarium. Fritz Dark Water Almond Leaf Extract is suitable for all softwater fish.

Saved my Betta!

Cindy in Phoenix

I came home from vacation, I did have home care for my fish while I was away. I found my Betta lethargic and sitting on the bottom. I really didn't know what to do....tank was clean, he had been given his pre-measured food while I was away. My betta keepers out there know you do not use Melafix or Pimafix on bettas. I really didn't want to use Bettafix, still worried about this product. I went to Petco and found this product - Dark Water. I used as recommended....after about 6 days, my betta wanted to eat. He started swimming again....now 2 weeks later, he is back to his old self. I think he had an infection and this product helped him fight it. Don't overdose, just use as recommended. he is in a five gallon, THE WATER DOES NOT GET DARK, ITS OK! I am so grateful this healed my little buddy! Thank you Fritz!!

Yes, I recommend this product.

Fritz dark water is a great addition to any tank. It helps to recreate the bettas natural habitat. It is wonderful for bettas with fin rot, or even just bettas that have really long fins. Definite must have in fishkeeping.

Yes, I recommend this product.

I bought this for my sick betta. Unfortunately, she passed anyway. Now I use it for my other betta who enjoys it. It doesn’t change the color much unless you add a whole lot, which is not recommended because it can drastically change your ph. Having carbon in the filter also eats up the color so that might be my problem. I use this for water changes or if my betta looks like she’s getting sick. Indian almond leaves or mopani wood also help tint the water and can be used with this.

Yes, I recommend this product.

Questions

1 - 5 of 5 Questions
Sort by: Newest Answers

Is this safe to use in an aquarium with live plants?

  1. Yes, I have used this in planted tanks before.

Is this product good to use for lowering PH level in freshwater aquarium, or only to darken water?

  1. Dark water works to condition your water naturally. The dark color is just the result of the tannins working in the water. It helps to lower stress and condition water. It also recommended for fish with fin rot.

When adding this during a water change, should it be combined with a dechlorinator conditioner?

  1. Yes. I would still add a water conditioner like Seachem Prime in addition to Fritz Dark Water.

does it need to be stored in the fridge? I have seen others that need to be stored there.

  1. No, this does not need refrigerated! Some of the nitrifying bacteria (like Dr. Tim's one and only) need refrigerated. This is okay at room temp.

How often do you use it?  Just at water change or every day ?

  1. I use it when I add or change the water. The amount I use is proportional to the amount of water I'm replacing.
