Best little 5 gallon tank

5 gallons of joy

After reading some of the negative comments i wanted to give my review. I’ve had this tank for roughly 4 years and if anything ever happens to it i will purchase another one. I currently have 1 betta and 5 small fish in it. It has 4 live plants and i keep the lighting set on a timer so the plants get adequate light both morning and evening. The only issue i do agree with in other reviews is the black does peel away from the back of the tank. In the 4 years I’ve owned it mine is only peeling slightly. I try not to let it get wet when cleaning the tank. When i do clean the tank i take the fish, plants, and driftwood out then fully clean the tank and change the water. I hope this is helpful to anyone deciding upon purchasing this awesome little tank.

Yes, I recommend this product.

Do not waste your money, very poorly made

This tank if poorly made and the customer service from Marineland is a joke. Very difficult to file a warranty issue and good luck getting a reply. Black part on back peeling, tank filter broke after a few months, light makes humming noise. Super easy for snails to get stuck in the water portion in the back where the media is. Marineland will not honor warranty and will ghost you so you will be out of $$.

No, I do not recommend this product.

Why this tank?

I just bought a new Marineland 5 Gallon Portrait after I moved. I have used two at my other home for 3 years, one I bought used for a cheap price had a hole that was repaired yet worked well. These tanks have an adjustable Filter from around 35 GPH to 85 GPH. This represents an improvement on the older acrylic 3 Gallon Eclipse System 3-, and 5-Gallon Eclipse Hex that Marineland used to carry years ago, that filter was only 35 GPH, and not enough for the 5 Gallon. Glass is always easier to clean the algae off than acrylic. The lights are adequate to grow Java Ferns, which grew like crazy in my two other tanks. Right now, I have 4 Neon Tetras, 1 Betta, and one Panda Cory, plus snails. I have sand and gravel for the substrate, two types of java ferns and some Vallisneria. I have decorated the aquarium with a few quartz rocks. I have the filter set at around halfway, since I have the Bio-Load a bit higher than your 1 fish per inch rule, though, I have never followed that rule, and have never had problems. The tank looks clean and sharp!

Yes, I recommend this product.

Pump broke after 2 months

We bought this kit on 3/15 and now, just 2.5 months later the pump has already stopped working. We checked it and cleaned it although it really wasn't dirty or gunked up. I called Petco customer service but since it was after Petco's absurdly strict 30 day return policy, they had no options for replacement or refund. They couldn't even advise us on what pump we could purchase to replace it. No help at all. Very disappointed in Petco.

No, I do not recommend this product.

Nice Betta tank

Real nice betta tank. You can turn the pump all the way down, but I have mine a notch above slowest. My betta likes to play in the slow current. I love the glass cover so you don't have to worry about the fish jumping out. I just wished they sold this tank in the stores.

Yes, I recommend this product.

I bought this tank last weekend for my betta fish Cosmo, and so far I think it was a good upgrade! Just enough room for him to explore :) I would recommend buying a heater depending on what type of fish you have, as it does not come with one. But overall, easy setup, beautiful look, love it!

Yes, I recommend this product.

I have two of them for around 2 years now. These are beautiful tanks. My java ferns grow very nicely in this tank, even too good. These tanks are not appropriate for breeding fish, since the openings got the water to come into the back of the tank is too large. I don't use the blue light, just the white lights. There are problems with the tank, not tank is perfect. One main problem with the tank is that the parts are not available for them on Marineland's website, unlike my older Eclipse System 2 Hood and Penguin parts. For example: the tubing connections have broken and I had to use my imagination to keep it working. For me the full 85 GPH on the adjustable Filter is a real plus compared to the older System 3 and Hex that was only 35 GPH. One needs it due to the decreased surface space on this tank. Hard to clean that algae off of the black plastic in the back...

Yes, I recommend this product.

excellent tank set up

i bought this tank a month ago and have no complaints thus far! setup is really easy, and the tank doesn’t take up much room. the overhead light is perfect, and the filter works great and is super quiet. if you have a betta like me you have to turn the filter down all the way so your fish won’t get its tail sucked in. all in all, a perfect beginner tank.

Yes, I recommend this product.

Does this tank come with a heater?

  1. No

Where can I find a replacement light for this tank?

  1. Check the Marineland web sight directly with you tank size etc. for a replacement

Where can I buy a replacement pump? Mine stopped working and I don’t want to buy a whole new kit.

  1. They are not currently sold separately. Have you opened the pump to remove the impeller for cleaning? Contact our team if you need additional help. petsupport@spectrumbrands.com.

I'm planning on doing a fairly heavily planted and aquascaped aquarium and want to make sure this is suitable. Where is the filter intake?

  1. When facing the front of the tank, the intake is to the right, in the black divider. The pump sits behind the black divider to the left. There is a foam cartridge and a carbon one behind the intake on the right.

Great aquarium! Why does the attachment to the filter outlet keep coming off? How do I fix this

  1. We'd have to have more information to try to figure out what is going on. Off the top of our head a hose clamp would help as a temporary solution. Check to see if the elbow is split.

what is the dimensions of the tank not including the separated filter area, base, or light?

  1. 9.63 x 9.63 x 11.5 inches.

Day1 setting up. as instructed, didnt turn pump on til the tank was full. at 1st it was nearly silent. i removed it to turn it lower & it's been SO loud ever since. everything connected. no fish yet as it is way too loud! what can i do??

  1. Make sure it is positioned securely and not moving around. Unplug it and remove the front cover to pull out the impeller. Check for any grit of other debris then reseat it, and re-install it.

My tank keeps filling up with water right to the lid when the pump is on.  Why is this happening?

  1. The pump is moving water faster than it can be replaced through the filters. Replace or clean the two filter elements. Or maybe turn down the output adjustment on the pump.

Would this tank be suitable for two African Dwarf Frogs?

  1. Yes this would be the perfect size for the dwarf frogs. Add a bit of driftwood and some live plants and they would be very happy!

Is the light that comes with this tank conducive for keeping live plants?

  1. I was able to keep some fairly easy to keep live plants in this tank.
