Aqueon PURE Betta Beads contain beneficial bacteria that help maintain a healthy environment in unfiltered aquariums. The beneficial bacteria aids in maintaining a balanced environment while the enzymes help breakdown organic sludge for better water clarity. These soft biodegradable balls create a fun enrichment activity for bettas while also encouraging their natural foraging behavior. Watch your betta play in the beads like a fun ball pit as they dive in and out. Replace the beads monthly and remove uneaten food for optimal results. If betta beads shrink prematurely, this is a quick indicator that the water hardness is not optimal for your betta. We recommend changing the water with soft (deionized or specially filtered) betta waters.

  • - Provides live beneficial bacteria and enzymes to maintain clear water
  • - Great environmental enrichment activity for Bettas! Watch as they play in and out of the soft gravel like a fun ball pit
  • - Soft biodegradable gravel encourages the natural foraging behavior of bettas for mental stimulation
  • - Aids in maintaining a healthy aquarium by breaking down organic sludge for a healthy balanced environment
  • - For use in unfiltered betta habitats. Add 1 pouch of betta beads per 1 gallon of water
  • - For best results replace betta beads once a month (add 1 pouch per 1 gallon of water) and perform a 25% water change every 2 weeks
  • - If betta beads shrink prematurely, this is a quick indicator that the water hardness is not optimal for your betta - we recommend changing the water with soft (deionized or specially filtered) betta waters

THIS KILLED MY BETTA! DO NOT BUY!

IF YOU LOVE YOUR BETTA, DO NOT USE THIS PRODUCT! I bought these beads based on good reviews I saw from other people. I thought they'd be good enrichment for my betta, who was extremely healthy and happy. A few days after adding the beads, he started doing really poorly. Couldn't swim up, super lethargic, basically just laid on the bottom of the tank on his side, barely able to move. I dumped the water immediately and cleaned everything else in the tank. After a few days of intensive cycling and treating the water, my betta improved a little and I was able to get him to eat blood worms from a dropper. However, he still could barely swim up and it was obvious his swim bladder had been impacted since he wasn't able to reach neutral buoyancy. I kept feeding him the blood worms, hoping for some more improvement, but he ended up passing yesterday. My boy would still be alive and happy if I had never bought this product.

No, I do not recommend this product.

These are great if you have a small tank with no filter. If you have a filtered tank they shrink within hours of putting them in the tank.

Useless

These beads are completely useless. The beads look cool in the bag, but once in the tank, they melt down into tiny little dots the size of Betta fish food pellets within 24 hours. They don't 'provide fun' for the fish. Every one of my Betta's ignored them, and now they just look like tiny bits of plastic trash on the bottom of the tank. They are 100% useless and a big waste of money. If you want to add beneficial bacteria to a tank, buy it in liquid bottle form and you will get much more value for your buck.

No, I do not recommend this product.

A Couple Suggestions for the Curious

So, I bought these about a month ago when I got my new betta buddy, Steve. Steve is in a 3 gallon Back to the Roots Water Garden aquaponics set up. At first he didn't really interact with em, but I decided to drop a review when I noticed this morning that he was actively digging around in them. He also seems to prefer resting on them rather than any of the current decorations I have in his tank. I definitely plan to pick up another bag and add em in when I do his water change this afternoon. I was surprised to see some of the other reviews complaining about a few things, but I've got some suggestions if you're interested in these for your betta. I think the reason why some people are seeing these dissolve really quickly might come down to the chemicals, set up, and filtration of their tanks. I have well water so I don't bother with any additives to my water, there's not bright light in my tank, and my filtration system is very gentle because it's a aquaponics set up. I think bright light and heavy filtration is why they don't last in some people's aquariums versus others. I've had a bag of these in my tank for about a month, and I'd say a quarter of them are still bopping around in there. My tiny little water pump does grab some of them up, but there's no opening big enough to suck them up. If you want to put plants and decorations in, you need to put in a gravel or sand substrate too. I have a gravel substrate, and the beads were added in on one side. This will anchor your decorations, and if you choose a black or white substrate, will help the beads' color pop. I personally don't care about the color - pink is just what they had in stock. I do recommend these for bettas. Bettas need enrichment and comfort the same as any other pet, and I think these beads are a great way to provide that. I also think set up matters as well. If your fish is in a brightly lit, fully kitted out tank, these might not work or might need to be added in a shaded area. If you're using something akin to my set up, go for it! They should work for you.

Yes, I recommend this product.

I've bought this product multiple times

This product is super fun for my betta! I usually still put rocks in the bottom and then the bubbles on top and my betta still loves to swim around in them as well as you still get the aesthetic look of having something on the bottom with the rocks since the bubbles are clear looking with a slight color tint. Now on the back of the packaging it says to not put this product in a filtered aquarium. Well I was curious as to why, the obvious being that the beads are so light they would get sucked up in the filter. The way my filter is there really isnt a way for them to get sucked up so I tried them in my filtered tank. Within 8 hours or so the beads got small and look how they get after a month or so in a non filtered tank. I still love this product and I think it's great but definitely do not use it in a filtered tank or they won't live up to what its suppose to do.

Yes, I recommend this product.

After reading the other reviews, I'm surprised at the problems people are having with them. I can see that plants and decorations wouldn't stand up in them, but I have my plants growing out of the tank from the top. I have been using the pink water beads for months, and change them when they start looking brownish. Some of the beads are very light pink and "disappear" in the water, but they're still there, just invisible. And my betta seems to love swimming through them and flipping them around like a giant ball bit. I came on the site to order more and saw the bad reviews. For reference, I have a 1.5 gallon unfiltered tank with plant roots sticking in the water, and use tap water with conditioner. No cloudy water, no dissolving beads, no issues.

Yes, I recommend this product.
