Made tank setup after a bacterial issue in my aquarium a breeze. My fish had no negative response to it at all. Even water test were on point. Good stuff.

Great for Plants!

Great for planted aquariums, but would not recommend it for looks. It does not look great, looks like potting soil or the dirt that worms come in. But is great for plant roots to hold on to.

Yes, I recommend this product.

Perfect for Planted Tanks

I bought this a few weeks ago and I decided to ignore some of the reviews about it creating foggy water and not being all black. To me the color doesn't matter too much as I covered it with white sand and am using it for the roots of my plants. It was a little foggy at first but cleared up in just a few hours, no issue. I would not recommend this "sand" if you want it for looks, but I do recommend it for planted tanks and put another substrate on top if you don't like the look.

Yes, I recommend this product.

A safe substrate for Mbunas.. I've been using this substrate since I started in the fish hobbie and I can tell based on my experience it works perfect with African cichlids.

Questions

1 - 8 of 8 Questions
Sort by: Newest Answers

how many rocks does it come with

  1. Ohhh I'd say roughly about 47,632,183 "rocks" are included in each bag.

Do you rinse this product or put it directly in the tank

  1. Although the bag says that it is not necessary to rinse it, I personally always do it. Comes with a water clarifier that works really good though.

Will this work well with Peacock Cichlids ?

  1. Yes, will work very well.

Can you use this substrate for South American cichlids ?

  1. I keep 6 geophagus with it and they do great, they sift through it but not as much as they would if the grains were smaller, they were larger than what I expected.

Does anyone know what millimete the grains are?

  1. Larger than sand by quite a bit...I got it for geophagus to be able to sift through and only the largest are able to actually get mouthfuls and sift like geo's should. Its great substrate but its quite a bit larger than sand.

Is it black from coloring like most black sands or is it natural black sand ?

Is the Zack black substrate sand or is it more like gravel?

    1. It is definitely more like a thick grained sand than it is like a gravel. I was surprised when i got it, it's not NEARLY as chunky as the pictures make it look. It also has a lot more white than the pictures, which I was happy about. Exactly what I was looking for in a dark substrate for my mixed cichlid tank.

Can this be used for a beta tank?

    1. No, this sand will raise the pH of the water. bettas need to be in softer water - a pH of 6.5-7.5. If you want a sand substrate, it should be inert.
