Great stuff just don’t get it shipped

Stop using FedEx

This stuff is great to use for a new aquarium. Just don’t get it shipped because FedEx is TRASH and they don’t treat stuff well. Petco should move on from this shipping company as I’ve heard from even the local store employees that even their live animals show up in rough shape. And Petco, SHAME ON YOU for disregarding the lives of your animals and the advice from your store employees and customers who have to deal with the issues of your shipper despite the many complaints I know you’re getting.

No, I do not recommend this product.

So far so good

My 75 gallon tank needed a redo. I was using sand for my plants, they did ok for a while then started dying off. This substrate had good reviews so I thought I'd give it a try. I saved 5 gallons of my old water, poured the new substrate in, no rinsing, then new water mixed with old water. Didn't experience any cloudiness, fish were fine, in fact, my tank seems more clear than ever before. So far I'm really happy I made the switch. I love how my tank looks now.

Yes, I recommend this product.

Black Gravel?

I had aquariums years ago but saw a video for an eco tank that i wanted to try. The bottom layer is supposted to be aquarium soil. I saw volcanic soil in the description so i thought this product would be more like dirt but this appears to be black gravel. i had purchased gravel for the top layer so in all honesty i am somewhat disappointed but the product has some good reviews. i'm not sure i can do an eco tank with it but i will read up and see. i tried to add images but the option wasnt working although i think everyone visiting this site is probably intelligent enough to know the difference between soil and gravel.

AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE! Phosphates!

AquaticRealms

Basalt (lava rock) is, by its very nature inert. However; this stuff is LOADED with Phosphates! I never figured out what crashed my 75g freshwater tank the first time… now I know. It’s THIS stuff! I checked everything for what was causing a green slime algae outbreak (AGAIN) after I completely rebuilt my 75g FW tank. I tested tap water, my RO/DI output water, tank water; I even crushed some of the Dragon Rock to test that… everything was negative (except bare tap water). There are two Cory Catfish in the tank with lots of plants and I do not add any food to the tank as they feed on algae. So where were the phosphates coming from to feed the slime algae?! So I decided to take 4 pebbles of substrate & place them In the test vial with RO/DI water. Shook the vial every minute for 10 minutes; then removed 3 of the 4 pieces. Ran the API Phosphate test and BINGO! Found the Phosphate problem! The longer I left the pebble in the solution, he more phosphate leached out and the darker blue the fluid became in the test vial! DO NOT BUY THIS STUFF… unless you want to deal with CONSTANT levels of Phosphates! (Ignore my old review saying this stuff was good. It won’t alter pH or ALK, but you will have a Phosphate nightmare!)

No, I do not recommend this product.

Base Gravel for shrimp or plant roots

GLee11

Decent value 20lb bag of base gravel. Same as the red/brown version, comes in black. Quality clean, dust free, and sized consistently. Volcanic in nature, is lightweight but strong enough to hold up over time, does not turn into dust unless forcefully using a gravel vacuum (not advised to vac) this substrate is best used as a base layer for your plants to root down, anchored roots should not be disturbed by vacuum. So this makes a great base of crushed variety. Cap the base in another decorative gravel or this product also mixes well with aquatic soils/clays such as NEO-soil (black) or fired clay ball (aka: "shrimp substrate" - Imagitarium brand, Fluval black or my personal favorite in quantity value = Brightwell Aquatics - Rio Black. Do NOT use dirt from the backyard!

Yes, I recommend this product.

Excellent freshwater substrate!

AquaticRealms

Rebuilding my old 75-gal freshwater tank and wanted a plant friendly substrate that wouldn’t alter water parameters & that also has a great look to it. The substrate is already cleaned, so you do not need to rinse before placing in your tank. It is also Basalt Gravel, which it will NOT alter your pH (other reviews that say it will or does; do not know what they are talking about). Basalt is an inert volcanic rock. You won’t be disappointed with this substrate!

Yes, I recommend this product.

Questions

Hi. I'm thinking about doing my first planted tank. Should I use this substrate? Also, do you need root tabs for it? Would adding sand on top of it be okay? I'm doing this because I'm planning on getting bottom dwelling fish/invertebrates.

  1. Eco Complete is and inert shale grave designed to pull nutrients and store the nutrients. It has a high CEC rating and since it is basically inert, you WILL need to add nutrients so it can store it and feed your plants. You can add root tabs along with dosing the water column. Eco complete will last a long time. You can mix Eco Complete with other aqua soils to boost the longevity and boost CEC capacity. This is how I use it. I use Seachem Flourite red for my base, ADA Amazonia regular, and Eco Complete as a substrate lasagna. You can use Eco Complete by itself, or you can cap it with sand. If you are capping, do not go more than a inch.

Will this lower aquarium PH?

  1. ECO-Complete is considered "inert" substrate and is volcanic in nature. Inert will NOT alter your pH, in either direction. Lower (acidic) or most report higher (basic) should not be the case in a volcanic rock. Most likely causes of reported pH changes when using this inert substrate are due to the other geo, rocks, decor, wood, or excess waste breaking down can also cause a lower - more acidic pH in a fully-stocked or overstocked tank and can cause root rot in anaerobic compaction of this substrate + mulm waste. If plants are yellowing and also breaking down this converts into acids and tannins which may appear as a lower pH, but the truth is this is an inert substrate, made up of volcanic crush. The water in the bag is basic... is probably why many reviews say it "raises pH" however this is only the water the factory used and you should use your own water and not chase pH in either direction.

Would Cory catfishes be able to safely live with this substrate? Is it too sharp? Will it hurt their little whiskers?

  1. No it won't hurt the Cory's whiskers.... Catfish are tough bottom-feeder fish It is difficult to kill a Cory, they're very hardy.

How many bags would I need for 125 gal. Tank?

  1. General Rule of thumb 1lb per size in gallons... in your case 120lbs = 6 bags! Excessive, but plants need room to root and not compact. If going pure eco... Do your own research before filling a 125 gal. You may find that you only use Eco-Complete as a base gravel, to be topped in some other... I.e river rock, volcanic rock, whatever you like... Diamonds lol! Point being... The general rule of thumb doesn't necessarily apply when considering a tank of such size you should also weigh in your other rock and decor going into the end result.

I bought a bag of this stuff but didn’t need to use the entire thing. What do I do with the rest? Am I able to save it for a later time? Or would it need to be air tight again?

  1. I also had quite a lot left over. I put it in a large zip top (self locking) plastic bag we had lying around and it has been fine for over a year now. I would think that if stored in a fashion where air can come in, it will dry out.

Is this safe for tadpoles?

If I buy this, do I need like potting mix underneath of this product or do I need a substrate above this product for the plants?

    1. You don't need to add anything else. It already has all the nutrients plants will need.

How much pounds will I need for a 100 gallon tank?

    1. Depends on how deep you want your substrate to be. Usually 1# per gallon. If you are doing heavy planted instead of just decorating, 1.5# per gallon.

I’ve read it’s a rough substrate. Has anyone used this with betta fish?

    1. You can add sand over the gravel to smooth it out

How many bags should I get for my 20 gallon long?

    1. I have a small 5 gallon tank and I don't believe I have used even half a bag. So two should be plenty, I would think.
