It Is Magnetic, Hence it has metal in it. lets say the metal is not a issue to water quality. The issue occurs when you go to clean your glass with a algae magnet. Do yourself a favor and don't do it. Otherwise manually clean your glass.

No, I do not recommend this product.

Perfect to make your aquascape and critters pop

This is basic black sand for saltwater that makes everything pop. It's fine enough to use for seahorses and also invertebrates, and looks amazing.

Yes, I recommend this product.

The fine texture allows this to stay UNDER prettier gravel. And it is gentle on the bodies of bottom dwelling creatures. I did have a lava rock on top and switched to a white rock on top because I found that its was to sharp, showed a ton of dirt, encouraged to much algae growth and the black on the bottom and a dark black ground caused me to kind of "lose" fish. I didn't see my cory cats to often, my neons hid most of the time.. so the gravel is great structurally, but consider how you will use it

No, I do not recommend this product.

It enhances the colors of the fish, visually more depth to the aquarium and the bonus of having nitrifying bacteria to establish the nitrogen cycle. Very pleased and would highly recommend it.

Yes, I recommend this product.

Great - small gravel! Great value!!

This gravel is really small but definitely gravel NOT sand. It's exactly what we wanted. We didn't want a large gravel to hold ammonia. Our goldfish love to pick through it much like parrot fish on a reef. It did take a week for the cloudiness to go away. Not sure if part of the problem was our Penguin hang-on-back filter - could have been. We tried the product that came with the gravel (a real bonus!) as well as another product. But I think mostly it took some time. Not a big deal though. It was definitely worth the process. There is quite a bit of white rock mixed in with the black (probably 85%/15% black/white). Looks really nice. I'd buy it again and probably will for another larger tank.

Yes, I recommend this product.

Great looking sand. Just be aware that some pieces are magnetic. Will stick to glass cleaning magnet.

Avoid if starting a reef tank.

Do not get if you are starting a reef tank. There is metal in this sand. It is picked up by a magnet so eventually it'll leach metals into your water and kill your corals.

No, I do not recommend this product.

will this sand be ok for Nassarius Snail and sand sifting starfish?

  1. Hi, I haven’t kept either species with this substrate. But I don’t feel any sharp edges and don’t believe it would harm them. It’s black color seems to bring out the colors of the fish. Good luck

should i establish the salinity of my tank before adding this or should i add this first and then play around with the salinity?

  1. Beneficial bacteria doesn't die from salinity changes.

Can I use this in a tank with sea monkeys/brine shrimp?

  1. Yes

Can i use in my freshwater aquarium? Having having difficulty keeping pH up to 7.0

  1. Yea you can...but will lose the chief benifit of this product. Also it is design for the chemisty of a salt water tank and to much of this to fast can shock your system and destablize it. I woyld try a dry substrate designed for freah water tanks before using this.

Would this substrate work with live plants in a freshwater aquarium?

  1. Honestly I would say no because plants need special nutrients for their root systems. This sand is more for cichlids and such.

I’m setting up a 55 gallon salt water fish tank, can I use this sand with gobies and other sifting creatures

I want to add this to the pool filter sand that is in my established 75 gal cichlid tank. I think it would look cool to have a mixture of black and white. My ph readings are around 8. Will this affect the ph of my tank?

Can I use this gravel for clown fish?

      1. Yes you can, & it will make their colors really POP & stand out !

Can I use this for Cichlids tank?

      1. Hi NJD pogi, We suggest that you contact your local Petco specialists for this. Thanks,

Can you use this in a turtle tank?

      1. Yes it's fine for turtles and not just for salt water.
