The bag has been rebranded and now it’s extremely large substrate instead of crushed like in the photo here. What you receive will look entirely different than what is picture including the bag and contents. Highly disappointed in petco for using old photos of old stock when it isn’t the same anymore.

No, I do not recommend this product.

I’ve used this CaribSea for 42 years in different tanks. Yes it is a little gravely, but the crushed coral, snail shells, aragonite and fossils. The combination of this mix is awesome for saltwater and fresh. I’ve used it in both. Keeps ph and alkalinity, magnesium levels ok. Rinse but not to much your water will be cloudy. It’s the crushed aragonite floating it will settle. Actually that milky substance in your tank is natural and healthy for the system. It will help with calcium levels and feed beneficial bacteria through the digestive system. Everything eats something in the water world. Very good product one tank is 17 years old with Caribsea crushed coral still looks good and still breaking down feeding the tank calcium, magnesium, and ph never changes. I’ve gone 4 years and not a single water change, only top off. 33 gal. Show tank. Fish, coral, live rock and this crushed coral make up so many places for beneficial bacteria to grow. I haven’t added anything new to this tank for 4 years just let it keep cycling and keep filtration clean.

Yes, I recommend this product.

Helped increase my PH in a Mbuna african cichlid tank. The Nitrates are doing better also. The fish seem to be more active and can move the small granules by mouth for their territorial spots while mating.

Yes, I recommend this product.

great product, but it requires alot of washing and will make your water cloudy at first. after a couple of days, a good filter will take care of the cloudy water.

Questions

I have a 20 gallon fresh water tank, how much will I need?

Can this be used with an undergravel filter?

    1. Yes,I have a reverse flow undergravel filter in my saltwater tank and not only is the CaribSea functional but is very attractive. One note though,I had to rinse a few times to clear up the cloudiness as I used 60 lbs.

Is it good for real plants!

I have a 40 gallon fresh water tank with a very high pH/very basic. Will this coral help make the environment more acidic/lower the pH? Also, can it withstand being cleaned with an electrical vacuum cleaner?

      1. Crushed coral has buffering capability which is why it's used in saltwater tanks which requires a higher ph so it wouldn't make your freshwater tank more acidic. It's heavy so vacuuming with any device shouldn't be a problem.

I need sand that will raise my ph to 7.8-8.5 Will this sand do that and keep it there?

      1. It's crushed coral so it will raise your Ph bit it is not the same texture as and. More like gravel. You could put some in a mesh bag in the back of your filter for a more steady higher Ph.

Hello how many bags would I need for a 100 Gallon tank ?

      1. It depends on the dimensions of the tank since not all 100 gallon tanks are the same and also how thick do you want the substrate to be. Most likely you will need three bags.

Can this be used in fresh water tanks?

      1. Yes, I have it in a 125 and 55 gallon african cichlid tanks.

Can this stuff be used in a refillable mineralizer for a R/O system, in order to put healthy minerals back into the water?

      1. I think it sounds good since RO water is acidic. It should get your Ph up.
