The secret to successfully keeping African Cichlids begins with Eco Complete African Cichlid Substrates. These mineralogically complete substrates contain aragonite to maintain the high pH African Cichlids need. Eco Complete Cichlid Substrates add calcium, magnesium, carbonate and more to recreate the African Rift Lake environment. Naturally buffers aquarium water to combat downward pH drift in African Cichlid tanks without the constant use of additives. Eco Complete African Cichlid Substrates are packed with live, water-purifying bacteria to jumpstart the cycling process. Its high internal surface area allows more room for water purifying bacteria to thrive. Also packed in a water conditioner to remove chlorine/chloramines and reduce fish stress.

Questions
I understand it says you don't need to rinse this substrate, but I would prefer to rinse it, will that be ok? I am switching tanks and I have to add all my fish to the new tank instantly, I can not wait like it says on the bag.
- If you rinse the substrate, you will wash away all of the benifcial bacteria that it comes with. The water can be conditioned with a conditioner that allows the instant addition of fish or you can just keep 50% of your original aquarium water , remove the old substrate, add the new one with your conditioner, and fill as normal. The water will be cloudy for a short while, but it won’t harm your cichlids. So the bottom line is that as counter intuitive that it may seem and much as you want to, you shouldn’t rinse this substrate. You can, but you shouldn’t. I didn’t and it worked just fine for me.

Any idea how many bags I would need for a 55gal?
- I used 2 bags in my 55gal. Looks enough but if you would like yours fuller add another bag or two
