Frog Heating and Lighting

Frogs are cold-blooded creatures, which means they change their internal body temperature based on their environment. They won’t be able to heat themselves if they are in a cold climate. Instead, your amphibian pet relies on frog lights and other heating devices to regulate their body temp. Frogs need to be warmer during the day than they do at night, but they may need help staying warm around the clock, depending on the internal temperature of your home.

FAQs About Frog Heating and Lighting

Yes. As cold-blooded animals, frogs require light and heat to stay warm. Thankfully, heat lamps for frogs and other tools allow pet parents to create the ideal habitat for their amphibian pets. There are day and night bulbs for your frog tank, as well as heating devices. You can heat your frog’s habitat using an under-tank heater or a terrarium heater. Frogs may also enjoy rock heaters—these heating devices look like a real rock, so your frog can perch themselves on top and soak up some heat while they relax in what feels like their natural environment.

Yes. Most frog habitats will not be able to sustain the ideal tank temperature without the help of a heater. Your frog’s tank should be between 75- and 85-degrees Fahrenheit by day and between 65- and 75-degrees by night. You can monitor frog tank temperature using a thermometer and adjust the temperature as needed. Products like digital infrared thermometers make it simple to capture the current temperature inside your frog tank.

Frogs need day and night lights for their environment. Daytime lights are blue, while night lights tend to have a red hue. You can find a combo pack at Petco that gives you one day bulb and one night bulb. Both LED and halogen lamps can be appropriate for a frog tank. You can find out more information about how to properly light a frog habitat by reading our Small Terrestrial Frogs Care Sheet.

Frogs need an amphibian heat lamp to stay warm at night if your home’s ambient temperature won’t keep their tank between 65- and 75-degrees Fahrenheit. If you live in a temperate climate your frog may be able to keep warm at night without a lot of heating tools. In wintertime, however, frogs who live in cold climate homes will need a heat lamp or heat pad to maintain the right temperature. You may find a night timer helpful to make sure your pet frog is warm enough after the sun goes down. Find out more at our White’s Tree Frog Care Sheet.
