A balanced and nutritional diet specially formulated for your hookbill's needs is an essential step in keeping your parrot happy and healthy. Diets for your parrot can completely consist of specialized pellets while others may include fortified seed mixtures or even dehydrated fruits and greens. There are an assortment of balanced diets available to ensure even the pickiest of parrots find a food they enjoy. Parrot treats play a valuable part in providing a balanced meal as well as a great way to bond with your parrot, but should not make up more than 10% of their diet.
Specialized pellets should make up to 60 to 70% of your parrot’s diet, plus fresh vegetables, fruits and small amounts of fortified seeds. A variety of treats are always welcomed, but ensure they do not exceed 10% of your pet's diet.
Fresh food and water should always be available. Vegetables and fruits not eaten within a few hours should be discarded and treats should not exceed 10% of total food intake.
Treats formulated for a parrot or large hookbill are sure to be a feathered fan favorite, but should not make up more than 10% of their total diet. Fresh fruits and vegetables such as bananas, zucchini, bell pepper, mango, peas and corn are a nice addition to their daily diet. Birds should never be fed avocado, fruit seeds, chocolate, caffeine or alcohol as these can cause serious medical conditions. Sugar and high fat treats should also be avoided for the health of your pet. Consult your veterinarian for a complete list of foods your bird can or cannot eat.
A seed only diet may not be balanced with the vitamins and minerals your parrot needs and can be high in fat. Seed only diets are associated with numerous health concerns so you should always consult your veterinarian about any concerns with your bird's nutrition to ensure the healthiest balanced diet is provided.
