My new puppy has weepy eyes. Is it normal or a health concern?

Good afternoon We are collecting our puppy on Sunday from a breeder and receiving photo updates. On the last update, i noticed his eyes are weepy. The breeder has said the pup was vet checked and that puppies sometimes have weepy eyes. Should we be concerned?

Hello. I would not say that weepy eyes are normal for any puppy. It is a little difficult to say from the photo, but I get the impression that there is a little inflammation in the skin around the eyes, & maybe even a little hair loss. In puppies, this could just be a mild infection, or even the presence of demodectic mange. A simple skin scrape can determine if this is mange, & it is generally pretty easy to clear up. If this is the puppy you have your heart set on, then have the breeder take him to their veterinarian with the stipulation that all clinical notes are sent to your veterinarian. If this is not possible, then I would make some arrangement to take your new puppy to your veterinarian within a day or so of you obtaining him. You can discuss if anything is found, how much the breeder might compensate you for the cost of the puppy, if you like. Otherwise, he is a beautiful puppy! From the photo, that looks to me more like a pustule (focal little infection) than a congenital defect (something he was born with). I wonder if he may have gotten a mild injury from playing with the other pups. If it hasn't gone away by the time the pup is ready to go home with you, I would make sure the breeder has the pup evaluated by their vet prior to you picking it up, or make sure the contract includes a clause that the breeder is responsible for having the bump evaluated and addressed.

My new puppy's eyes are watery. Is it normal, and what can I do?

He is so cute! This can be a very normal thing is dogs like him. I wouldn’t be too worried unless he is ever favoring his eyes or if the discharge become thick and green or yellow. Why are my senior dog's eyes weeping frequently all of a sudden?

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Bailey. Yes occasional eye discharge can be normal, but very frequent weeping from both eyes is not. It could be he has an eye infection. I would take him into the vet first thing in the morning for a health check. Any eye problem needs to be checked out promptly, as leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. I hope this helps!

I tend to see puppies with droopy eyes occasionally get red conjunctival tissues especially when tired. And sometimes after excitement. If he develops squinting or abnormal eye discharge then I recommend your Vet examining the eyes. I wish you the best!

My new puppy's eye looks off. Is it a corneal abrasion or cataracts?

Hello! Getting a new puppy is so exciting. Unfortunately, from the photo, it is very hard to get a sense of the abnormality you're concerned about. I would make sure that any puppy from a breeder has a health guarantee and also has recent records of a clean bill of health from their veterinarian. You can ask for these things or even ask that the puppy be examined by an ophthalmologist prior to purchase to make sure the change of her eye truly is 'nothing'.

Is it normal for my beagle puppy to have a visible red third eyelid?

That is a very good looking puppy! It can be quite normal for some breeds,including beagles, to have a little bit of droopiness in the lower eyelids. This allows you to visualize their third eyelid, which is the bright pink membrane that you see in the photos. Your pet’s eyes appear normal. Signs of a problem would include squinting, rubbing the eyes as if they are itchy, or a discharge. As Your puppy grows, the droopiness gets less and less. Thank you for your question.

My 3-week-old puppy has a cloudy eye with a pink lump. What's wrong?

I recommend to get this puppy examined today. That eye looks inflamed and possibly infected. It's possible this is a congenital anomaly but the appearance of the eye looks suspicious for something is trapped in the eye (hair or or object) or that a virus has causes a painful corneal abrasion. The opacity may represent corneal edema which is very worrisome. It's possible he is in pain so get this addressed quickly. Best of luck.
