My new puppy's eye looks off. Is it a corneal abrasion or cataracts?

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Female | unspayed | 5 months old | 10 lbs

Hi I am about to purchase a puppy, one of the eyes looks a little off to me. I asked the breeder and they said it is fine. Can you give me your advice. I am concerned for a corneal abrasion or cataracts? She is a 5 month shih tzu and seems active and healthy- is able to track her toys. I know she already got surgery for an umbilical hernia and right nare opening.

Hello! Getting a new puppy is so exciting. Unfortunately, from the photo, it is very hard to get a sense of the abnormality you're concerned about. I would make sure that any puppy from a breeder has a health guarantee and also has recent records of a clean bill of health from their veterinarian. You can ask for these things or even ask that the puppy be examined by an ophthalmologist prior to purchase to make sure the change of her eye truly is 'nothing'.

Mallow sounds like she is having quite a number of issues! Shortness of breath and inappropriate, involuntary movement of the legs are both very troubling findings for such a young puppy. I would be worried about exposure to some sort of toxin at some point in time or some sort of infectious process going on systemically. While I can not rule out their relationship, the problem with the eyes could very well be separate entirely. They look very cloudy, which could be an indication of a corneal problem, juvenile cataracts, glaucoma, or some other benign cause. Taking into account the discharge coming from the eyes, I have doubt that something benign is the cause of her issues. I would suggest having her evaluated fully by a veterinarian for all of these issues. Based on the clinical signs, they are almost certainly going to want to obtain blood work and x-rays to assess the situation. Best of luck!

From the photo, that looks to me more like a pustule (focal little infection) than a congenital defect (something he was born with). I wonder if he may have gotten a mild injury from playing with the other pups. If it hasn't gone away by the time the pup is ready to go home with you, I would make sure the breeder has the pup evaluated by their vet prior to you picking it up, or make sure the contract includes a clause that the breeder is responsible for having the bump evaluated and addressed.

My 3-week-old puppy has a cloudy eye with a pink lump. What's wrong?

I recommend to get this puppy examined today. That eye looks inflamed and possibly infected. It's possible this is a congenital anomaly but the appearance of the eye looks suspicious for something is trapped in the eye (hair or or object) or that a virus has causes a painful corneal abrasion. The opacity may represent corneal edema which is very worrisome. It's possible he is in pain so get this addressed quickly. Best of luck.

My new puppy has weepy eyes. Is it normal or a health concern?

Hello. I would not say that weepy eyes are normal for any puppy. It is a little difficult to say from the photo, but I get the impression that there is a little inflammation in the skin around the eyes, & maybe even a little hair loss. In puppies, this could just be a mild infection, or even the presence of demodectic mange. A simple skin scrape can determine if this is mange, & it is generally pretty easy to clear up. If this is the puppy you have your heart set on, then have the breeder take him to their veterinarian with the stipulation that all clinical notes are sent to your veterinarian. If this is not possible, then I would make some arrangement to take your new puppy to your veterinarian within a day or so of you obtaining him. You can discuss if anything is found, how much the breeder might compensate you for the cost of the puppy, if you like. Otherwise, he is a beautiful puppy! Puppy has a white spot in its eye. Is it cataracts? Will it go blind?

June is such a cutie! Unfortunately without seeing it, I cannot say what it is. If it is cataracts then it is possible that the congenital cataracts could get worse and could eventually lead to blindness. There isn't any good treatment to help prevent it from progressing. If it becomes mature and is causing blindness, you can have an ophthalmologist do surgery to repair it. If the recheck is still seeing the white speck, you could always request to have an ophthalmology consult done as well. The breeder may or may not be willing to do that. It could also be a cholesterol deposit which is benign and won't cause any issues. I hope this helps!

What's causing my 12-week-old puppy's painful eye and nervousness?

I think the image is distorted, but this appears to be severe corneal damage and anterior synechia formation. This happens when the eye repairs a large defect in the outer part of the eye. The eye may or may not be visual and will likely heal more. There is definitely a possibility that this could cause complications in the future, but may heal well and not cause any further issues. I would have to examine the eye to tell more, so it's best to correspond with the vet for more information and to ensure he is safe for travel. I hope that helps and all is well with Chestnut.

My puppy's eyes are cloudy, shifting apart, and red. Should I worry?

Minnie should go to see the vet as soon as possible. I cannot diagnose her without seeing her in person, but based on your description and her photo I am very concerned she could have a condition called congenital hydrocephalus, which causes fluid buildup in the skull. Unfortunately medical treatment is often not curative and surgery may be needed. As I say, I cannot say that this is her problem for certain, but she needs an exam by a vet to determine if it could be the source of her abnormality.

What's that thing in my dog's eye? Is it a scar or serious problem?

It's hard to tell if that is a hair or problem with the cornea/lens. If it is new or changing, it would be best to have a vet take a look at it -- they can stain it with a special dye to check if it is a cut or abrasion and requires treatment.
