My new puppy's eyes are watery. Is it normal, and what can I do?

Hello, my dog is a chiweenie and his eyes have been very watery since the first day I got him. Is this something I should be worried about? I included a picture of his eyes. Everything else is normal, he plays, and acts like a normal puppy. Are there eye drops I can give him to help? Or is there something else I can do? Thanks.

He is so cute! This can be a very normal thing is dogs like him. I wouldn’t be too worried unless he is ever favoring his eyes or if the discharge become thick and green or yellow. You can try some Benadryl to see if it helps decrease the watering. See link below for dosing. I hope this helps!

You should talk to your dr about what vaccines you need and on what schedule due to the fact a veterinarian cannot legally provide advice on humans. As far the eye discharge, it may be due to allergens and dust accumulating in the eye or it may be the start of an infection. If his eyes are open and clean--which they appear to be--then the best thing to do is to rinse the eyes. If you notice any redness or swelling or he does not want to keep his eye open, then I would worry there is problem in his eye and he needs to be checked

It's possible and it has nothing to do with the vaccinations either (eye infections are not among the things your dog is vaccinated for), he probably caught a common eye infection, just take him to the vet to get it checked as he will need prescription eye drops to get better.

Yorkshire terriers are a breed that tend to have watery eyes. Excessive tears can be caused by blocked tear ducts, allergies, light sensitivity or pain, etc. Brown discharge is often older tears that have dried and stained. Creamy discharge can indicate infection or inflammation of the eyes and should be evaluated by a veterinarian. I would recommend that you use a warm wet washcloth to gently clean around Yoggi's eyes twice a day for a few days. If it doesn't seem improved or additional symptoms develop, then he should be examined by a vet.

Hello. I would not say that weepy eyes are normal for any puppy. It is a little difficult to say from the photo, but I get the impression that there is a little inflammation in the skin around the eyes, & maybe even a little hair loss. In puppies, this could just be a mild infection, or even the presence of demodectic mange. A simple skin scrape can determine if this is mange, & it is generally pretty easy to clear up. If this is the puppy you have your heart set on, then have the breeder take him to their veterinarian with the stipulation that all clinical notes are sent to your veterinarian. If this is not possible, then I would make some arrangement to take your new puppy to your veterinarian within a day or so of you obtaining him. You can discuss if anything is found, how much the breeder might compensate you for the cost of the puppy, if you like. Otherwise, he is a beautiful puppy! My dog has watery eyes and is less playful. Normal or concerning?

Hello. If the eyes are watery sometimes with just a clear discharge, this is ok. This can be normal. If the eyes are red, or the discharge is yellow or cream or green then there is likely an infection that needs medications. Puppies sometimes like to sleep and not play, so if Popey is normal most of the day and sometimes not as playful then I would not worry, however if he is continually more lethargic he could have a virus, and you should get him checked by a vet. My puppy has white eye discharge and is tired. Is this normal?

Hello, sorry to hear about Pax. It could be that he is having normal eye secretions that are becoming stuck on his fur. As long as he is not itching at his eyes, having profuse persistent discharge, squinting, or having a red eye then I would continue to monitor him. You can use a damp cotton ball to wipe the fur around his eye and keep it clean. If the discharge worsens, or if he develops any sneezing or nasal discharge then you should have him evaluated by a veterinarian as this may indicate an upper respiratory infection. Place an e-collar cone on him to prevent rubbing or pawing at the eyes. Consider a recheck with your veterinarian or a veterinary opthalmologist to diagnose eye infection or injury. Certain OTC antihistamines can be used but only under the direction and guidance of your veterinarian.

My dog has clear eye discharge. When should I worry about it?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Buttercup. It is difficult to say without seeing a picture, but a lot of small breed dogs will experience epiphora or clear tearing of the eyes. As along as it is clear, the eye is not red and the dog is not squinting, it is generally not an issue. However, if it is new and only one eye, you will want to have her evaluated by her veterinarian. She can have an eyelash contacting the surface of her eye causing irritation. Yes, allergies can cause excessive tearing. Other causes include obstructed tear ducts and tiny eyelashes rubbing against the cornea (distichiasis). Have Smokey examined by your veterinarian for a diagnosis. The eye should be stained to rule out corneal injury as well. Antihistamines may help allergies, flushing the tear ducts may open them up and having the lashes plucked should decrease tearing.
