My new puppy has a bubble under his eye. Should I be concerned?

HI, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Trigger! I can't see the bubble you are referring to in your pictures but your description has me very worried. When it comes to eye issues it is best to have the pet seen as soon as possible. From the picture I can tell Trigger's eye is very painful. Causes could be: corneal ulcer than is about to rupture or has ruptured or glaucoma. Both of these issues can be very serious for the health of the eye. From the photo, that looks to me more like a pustule (focal little infection) than a congenital defect (something he was born with). I wonder if he may have gotten a mild injury from playing with the other pups. If it hasn't gone away by the time the pup is ready to go home with you, I would make sure the breeder has the pup evaluated by their vet prior to you picking it up, or make sure the contract includes a clause that the breeder is responsible for having the bump evaluated and addressed.

I recommend to get this puppy examined today. That eye looks inflamed and possibly infected. It's possible this is a congenital anomaly but the appearance of the eye looks suspicious for something is trapped in the eye (hair or or object) or that a virus has causes a painful corneal abrasion. The opacity may represent corneal edema which is very worrisome. It's possible he is in pain so get this addressed quickly. Best of luck.

It may just be a stye or even an insect bite. As long as it isn't bothering him, I wouldn't be worried about it and just recommend monitoring it. A lot of times these go away on their own. However, if it is bothering him I would recommend placing an e-collar on him to prevent him from rubbing his face for now, then get him seen by your vet for medications to help it resolve. It looks like it is most likely an abscess, or pus filled pocket. Possibly from a bite or puncture wound? Without seeing and feeling it I can’t rule out the possibility of a tumor but at 9 months old that would be unlikely. I would highly encourage you to have him evaluated by your veterinarian as soon as possible. In the meantime warm water and Epsom salt compresses can be helpful. I am sorry to hear about Bobo. Unfortunately your photo is a little blurry and so I am not able to identify the area you are concerned about. Possible causes for a circular/round swelling could include a tumor (we can have benign tumors that don't cause issues and can be monitored and malignant tumors which behave aggressively and require surgical removal) or a stye or pocket of infection. I would recommend an examination by your dog's vet to look at the area of concern. If they feel it is a stye/infection they may prescribe an antibiotic. If they feel it is a tumor they may recommend removal or regular monitoring.

Hello. I would not say that weepy eyes are normal for any puppy. It is a little difficult to say from the photo, but I get the impression that there is a little inflammation in the skin around the eyes, & maybe even a little hair loss. In puppies, this could just be a mild infection, or even the presence of demodectic mange. A simple skin scrape can determine if this is mange, & it is generally pretty easy to clear up. If this is the puppy you have your heart set on, then have the breeder take him to their veterinarian with the stipulation that all clinical notes are sent to your veterinarian. If this is not possible, then I would make some arrangement to take your new puppy to your veterinarian within a day or so of you obtaining him. You can discuss if anything is found, how much the breeder might compensate you for the cost of the puppy, if you like. Otherwise, he is a beautiful puppy!
