My puppy ate baby Motrin and is throwing up. Does she need a vet?

Contact the ASPCA animal poison control center at (888) 426-4435 and they will help you determine the potential severity of Max's ingestion based upon the maximum amount of ibuprofen he may have ingested for his current body weight. From there, I expect that he will need to go to an ER vet for blood work and likely fluid therapy and monitoring. You should never give this medication or any other that contain Ibuprofen to your dog as it is toxic, doses as low as 5mg/pound could potentially be toxic to Nina. The amount you gave her is not likely to cause a severe toxicity, but you should watch her for any of the following: Diarrhea, Vomiting, abdominal pain and anorexia. If she shows any of these symptoms- take her to the vet urgently.

The motrin is likely masking some of the pain he may be undergoing, however, if his pain is associated with kidney disease, Motrin can cause this to get worse. Luckily this does appear to be below the minimum toxic dose for ibuprofen which would be 25 MG/kg or 227 MG for a 20 lb dog. If there is any way she may have ingested more you should contact a veterinarian or animal poison control right away since puppies are more likely to develop kidney disease secondary to ingestion of ibuprofen. Poor Darby! I would not give her any more ibuprofen as this is toxic to dogs. I would have your vet take a look at her as I am worried about her not eating/drinking and breathing funny especially since she is so young and small. It is possible she could have aspiration pneumonia which if left untreated could be very serious. Your vet will be able to listen to her heart and lungs, and even do blood work and x-rays if needed. It can cause severe kidney damage or even ulcers in the stomach or intestines. Ulcers can be indicated by black tarry or coffee grounds like stool. I suspect you were right that he is painful based on your description of his behavior. Small breed dogs can be prone to back pain. The muscles that line the spine can spasm making the dog very sore. There not over-the-counter pain medications that I can recommend for him. I would keep him very quiet and carry him as much as possible. Encourage him to eat and drink as much as possible. If there is any way he could see a veterinarian, it would be best. I hope this information helps.
