My dog ate infant Motrin. Is this human pain reliever safe for her?

Motrin can be very toxic to the kidneys and gastrointestinal tract in dogs, but the toxicity is dose dependent. At 25 mg/kg we can see stomach and intestinal ulcers and even perforations. At >100 mg/kg the medication can cause severe kidney failure. 25 mg/kg for Susie would be 477 mg, and that would mean she would need to lick over 2 tsp of the Motrin off the floor to ingest a toxic dose. It may be that something else is causing her vomiting and decrease in appetite, and I would recommend having her seen by a veterinarian. If you think Susie may have ingested over 2 tsp I would recommend taking her to a veterinarian ASAP. If she is otherwise healthy it may be okay to wait until you are off work.

No, it is not safe to give Buffy Motrin, so please do not give it to her. Many human OTC pain medications are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. The only safe pain medications for dogs are available at the vet. I would have her seen by a vet first thing Monday to get pain medication prescribed. In the meantime, rest her as much as possible. NOOOO!! Do not give any Motrin!! I don't know why you want to give this but if you are going to take her to the vet you do not want to mask any signs that the vet may need to make a diagnosis. Also, the vet will want to give you a different kind of anti-inflammatory and that will react with the Motrin. Motrin (ibuprofen) has a VERY narrow safety margin so just the tiniest bit of overdose can be life-threatening. Oh no, Max! Ingestion of ibuprofen (Motrin) is quite toxic to dogs and can cause GI ulceration, severe liver damage, and acute renal (kidney) failure. Contact the ASPCA animal poison control center at (888) 426-4435 and they will help you determine the potential severity of Max's ingestion based upon the maximum amount of ibuprofen he may have ingested for his current body weight. From there, I expect that he will need to go to an ER vet for blood work and likely fluid therapy and monitoring. Depending on how recently he ingested the ibuprofen, they may also be able to induce vomiting. Good luck!

While this would be within the therapeutic index and it is supposed to be safe, this medication is not commonly used for pain control in dogs as it is not well-studied. It can cause severe kidney damage or even ulcers in the stomach or intestines. Ulcers can be indicated by black tarry or coffee grounds like stool. I suspect you were right that he is painful based on your description of his behavior. Small breed dogs can be prone to back pain. The muscles that line the spine can spasm making the dog very sore. There not over-the-counter pain medications that I can recommend for him. I would keep him very quiet and carry him as much as possible. Encourage him to eat and drink as much as possible. If there is any way he could see a veterinarian, it would be best. I hope this information helps.

While it is not recommended to give dogs ibuprofen, in some cases under very strict veterinary conditions they can get it. The amount Gator ate is lower than the recommended dose, so he should be ok. Do NOT give him anymore.
