My dog is crying, pacing, and seems to have back pain. Is Motrin safe?

No, it is not safe to give Buffy Motrin, so please do not give it to her. Many human OTC pain medications are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. The only safe pain medications for dogs are available at the vet. I would have her seen by a vet first thing Monday to get pain medication prescribed. In the meantime, rest her as much as possible. NOOOO!! Do not give any Motrin!! I don't know why you want to give this but if you are going to take her to the vet you do not want to mask any signs that the vet may need to make a diagnosis. Also, the vet will want to give you a different kind of anti-inflammatory and that will react with the Motrin. Motrin (ibuprofen) has a VERY narrow safety margin so just the tiniest bit of overdose can be life-threatening. I would recommend instead to apply heat to the area (hot water bottle, heating pad) and massage it gently. This will increase blood supply and add relaxation the the muscle tissues. The problem with giving him medication tonight is that the doctor will likely want to put him on a medication that is safe for dogs. Each medicine has a wash out period, meaning that he cannot take another medication until the second one has cleared out of his system. This is generally 1-7 days depending on the product. It may cause the doctor not to be able to use the medication of choice. If he continues to hurt, call his veterinarian or an emergency clinic and see if you can get him in for an exam for pain medications if nothing else. I hope Balto starts feeling better soon!
