My dog ate ibuprofen after choking. Is it toxic? Why is she sick?

Loss of appetite can be observed with many conditions such as gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, kidney disease, pancreatitis, among many other possibilities. Ibuprofen should not be given to dogs as even in small amounts it can be toxic. I recommend that you have Baby girl evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Motrin can be very toxic to the kidneys and gastrointestinal tract in dogs, but the toxicity is dose dependent. At 25 mg/kg we can see stomach and intestinal ulcers and even perforations. At >100 mg/kg the medication can cause severe kidney failure. 25 mg/kg for Susie would be 477 mg, and that would mean she would need to lick over 2 tsp of the Motrin off the floor to ingest a toxic dose. It may be that something else is causing her vomiting and decrease in appetite, and I would recommend having her seen by a veterinarian. If you think Susie may have ingested over 2 tsp I would recommend taking her to a veterinarian ASAP. If she is otherwise healthy it may be okay to wait until you are off work.

Advil is potentially very toxic for dogs, it can cause acute kidney failure and the amount she ingested is enough to cause severe damage. if she did not throw up the pills you must take her to the emergencies urgently, she will need to be put on IV fluids and will be given activated charcoal to try and neutralize the toxic effect of Advil. she will also need to have a blood test done to make sure the kidneys are not affected.

Since you managed to go take her to a vet right away and he she had the proper treatment there is a good chance that she will be ok. You will find out next week when you take her to your own vet for some blood tests checking her kidneys and liver. If those are normal then she did not get damaged by the Ibuprofen.

Hi there. We can see serious GI side effects, including stomach ulcers and internal bleeding, at ibuprofen doses over 50 mg/kg. If Dubs is 35 pounds and may have ingested 1200 mg of ibuprofen, this would be about 75 mg/kg - so yes, he would be at risk of developing some serious problems. I would recommend taking him to the vet today for an exam. The veterinarian may recommend checking some lab work to see if there is any evidence of bleeding in his stomach, and will probably prescribe medication to help protect his stomach lining for the next few days until the ibuprofen is out of his system.

Oh no, that's not good! Ibuprofen is toxic to dogs, and the best thing for you to do is take Paxx into the vet immediately. The vet can start decontamination procedures to prevent ibuprofen toxicity from occurring. Please take Paxx into an ER vet or find a vet on call to see him now.

The low end of the toxic dose range is 50mg/kg, which is about 1500mg. He should be fine but if you begin to notice signs of vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy or inappetance then I would recommend having a veterinarian take a look at him so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made.
