My puppy ate Advil. Is 200mg ibuprofen safe for my 20lb dog?

Dogs can have ibuprofen but it is not recommended due to the high chance of side effects and it has a very narrow dosing range. Just a little bit too much is a bad overdose. So, that is why it isn't recommended. The usual dose is 2.5 to 4 mg per pound so for a dog that is 20 pounds the dose range is 50mg to 80mg. So, yes, 200mg is a huge overdose for a 20 pound dog.

Fortunately this dose is low enough that it should not cause a concern, as long as you are certain more than one capsule was not ingested. Hunter may have ingested 8 mg/kg of ibuprofen based on the weight you provided. Ibuprofen can cause stomach and intestinal ulcers at doses higher than 25 mg/kg and kidney damage at 120 mg/kg. I would still recommend monitoring him for signs of nausea or diarrhea, but veterinary intervention is not required. Hello. You do not say what strength the ibuprofen was, but a 50 pound dog can take about 225 mg every 12-24 hours. Toxicity may be seen if your dog ingested around 568 mg. If the tablet was 400 mg or less, Zeke will be fine, but if this was a 600mg tablet or more, you should contact your veterinarian. Hi there. We can see serious GI side effects, including stomach ulcers and internal bleeding, at ibuprofen doses over 50 mg/kg. If Dubs is 35 pounds and may have ingested 1200 mg of ibuprofen, this would be about 75 mg/kg - so yes, he would be at risk of developing some serious problems. I would recommend taking him to the vet today for an exam. The veterinarian may recommend checking some lab work to see if there is any evidence of bleeding in his stomach, and will probably prescribe medication to help protect his stomach lining for the next few days until the ibuprofen is out of his system.

1200mg is a seriously toxic amount. I would recommend that you call ASPCA's poison control number. That number is 888-426-4435. There is a $65 charge, but they will be able to best advise you. While this would be within the therapeutic index and it is supposed to be safe, this medication is not commonly used for pain control in dogs as it is not well-studied. That one dose should not hurt her but you need to watch out for side effects. Dogs can take ibuprofen but it has a narrow safety margin and has high probability of causing side effects with repeated administration or overdose. The dose is 5-8mg/kg so at the high end of the dose she could have taken 300mg. So, again, that one dose I would not be worried but DO NOT let her get anymore and monitor for side effects.
