My dog ate Motrin, I induced vomiting, what should I do now?

Motrin can be very toxic to the kidneys and gastrointestinal tract in dogs, but the toxicity is dose dependent. At 25 mg/kg we can see stomach and intestinal ulcers and even perforations. At >100 mg/kg the medication can cause severe kidney failure. 25 mg/kg for Susie would be 477 mg, and that would mean she would need to lick over 2 tsp of the Motrin off the floor to ingest a toxic dose. It may be that something else is causing her vomiting and decrease in appetite, and I would recommend having her seen by a veterinarian. If you think Susie may have ingested over 2 tsp I would recommend taking her to a veterinarian ASAP. If she is otherwise healthy it may be okay to wait until you are off work.

Contact the ASPCA animal poison control center at (888) 426-4435 and they will help you determine the potential severity of Max's ingestion based upon the maximum amount of ibuprofen he may have ingested for his current body weight. From there, I expect that he will need to go to an ER vet for blood work and likely fluid therapy and monitoring. The motrin is likely masking some of the pain he may be undergoing, however, if his pain is associated with kidney disease, Motrin can cause this to get worse. I would recommend that Ricky is evaluated by his veterinarian soon to make sure there isn't anything more severe such as liver disease, pancreatitis, or kidney disease as these may require more aggressive medical attention. Indomethacin is an NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory) medication. It is not routinely used in pets and can definitely cause problems if ingested at a toxic level. If you even suspect that your dog has taken one of your tablets I would recommend seeking veterinary assistance immediately. They likely will induce vomiting, and may recommend some precautionary treatments such as activated charcoal, IV fluids and stomach protectants. Monitoring blood work can also be indicated depending on how much was ingested. I would recommend keeping your medication in an area of the house that your dog does not routinely have access too, and perhaps even using a pill doser so that you are not having to open the whole bottle to every day-you only have the medication for the day set aside. That will help reduce the risk.

Stomach ulcers can occur, causing abdominal pain and blood in the stool. Treatment can involve several different options. Depending on how long ago Jellybean ingested the ibuprofen, your veterinarian may recommend inducing him to vomit. This will not be effective though if the ingestion was too long ago. The administration of activated charcoal can decrease the amount of of ibuprofen absorbed into the blood stream. Most dogs are also hospitalized for fluids to help protect the kidneys from damage as well. I recommend that Jellybean is examined by his veterinarian as soon as possible. Definitely call your veterinarian as well to discuss his particular situation. Overall, overdose and toxicity situations are best treated by a veterinarian as soon as possible. The sooner treatment begins, usually the better the outcome. Ask your veterinarian if he/she has a payment plan available or accepts Care Credit. I hope Jellybean does well!
